One of my horses had surgery last year for a stone in his intestine. During the surgery while either putting the breathing tube in or out they hit that nerve that caused half his flapper paralyzed. Now he’s a roarer. Anyone have any history with this. Treatment? If tie back surgery was it worth it / successful?  Did hot and humidity affect them running?

I just had the tie-back surgery done on a mare.  Same scenario. I was told a needle placed too far down her neck may can damage the nerve. I know that hasnt happened here so i tend to believe the damage was done at a large vet school hospital when she was there for another procedure. Never again will one of my horses step foot in a vet school clinic/hospital. We tried antibiotics and steroids first hoping an infection was causing the issue. I had her scoped by  2 different good equine vets a few monts apart, and every vet i consulted with told me she HAS to have that surgery sooner or later if she is going to continue running barrels. so surgery is done and we are waiting for her to heal and get back to work. Good luck with yours.
