I was told when we insure our barn/house that it would be insured as a barn and personal property. So if something would happen would I not get money back on house? or is it better to just build house separate from the barn? or by insuring barn and personal property pretty much insuring a house? I've been very blessed to never have to file claims on a house or property so I'm not sure how it all works. I'd like to here from people not just ins. company. Thanks!
I was told the house barn combo is very hard to insure. No insurance company wants to insure them. House & seprate barn which we have isn't a problem to insure.

Several years back we looked into a barn/house/shop combination. After researching, we decided against it and built a stand-alone home at our farm. We are glad we did. Insurance easier to obtain; easier to re-sell. We have a separate barn and a separate shop. We have been living happily at our farm for five years with no regret regarding building separate buildings.
"Barndominiums" have become quite popular. Most insurance companies have a policy to cover these type of homes. What state are you located in? Maybe I can help or direct you to someone that can.

I had plans drawn up. Bank approved. We were a couple weeks from signing and starting construction, and bank decided we needed to separate house and barn. Went to a different lender. They would loan but only for 20 years not 30. We ended up changing lenders, builders, and floor plans that separated the house and barn. I do love my house and barn. I think I would've been happy either way, though. But if anyone needs plans for a house/barn combo, I have some that cost me $1200 and never got to use... ??

I am in Alabama, and I have a house/barn. It is insured through State Farm insurance. It is a homeowners policy and has been insured for a little over 10 years.
