At jackpots : Smokes runs, concentrates well, usually places.

Rodeos: Forget your name, think you made a fast run only to watch the video and realize you cruised through while riding like a paralyzed monkey.

Rodeos are usually tougher and make you a little more nervous because of the spectators

OH NO, NOT A PARALYZED MONKEY.................

This is basically my issue between jackpots and open/super shows (I dont do many rodeos). God forbid we have a good run if there are more than 100+ horses entered. Drives me crazy!

It even happens to me in THE SLACK at the rodeos. I swear. I know it's a mind thing. Just have to get over it!

Yes, I rope, don't run barrels but I feel the differences and have focused hard this year on changing it. I have noticed 1) I am way more comfortable in t-shirt/ball cap than button up and cowboy hat. I feel restricted wearing rodeo attire and roping and I have worn it my entire life... 2) I was pumping myself up before a rodeo run which is the opposite of what I do in the practice pen or at a jackpot. So I started riding in the box thinking exactly like I would for a practice run, just as calm, just as easy, and telling myself the shot I would take versus just seeing what happens. These last two weekends I've won checks and even had people who know me well walk up and say that just looked like a picture perfect practice run - and that was my goal! I know roping is a little different but I have been struggling with the mental and have even spoke with mental coaches so I understand your pain. Just know it will take some serious time and focusing to realize what works for you and how to make it work.

I have a really great friend that made it to NFR, her advice to me was gotta decide if you want to rodeo or jackpot.  So if you want to rodeo go to bout 6 rodeos in a row without any jp in between and then add your jp in once you get the rodeo down.  Good luck!!!

I rope and run barrels both, and I have the opposite problem.

Rodeo--GAME FACE.  I'm talking in the zone, focused, out for blood, mistakes/safetying up doesn't win checks.

Jackpot--Meh, just go get a time, might still win something.  There are 4 D's.  It's just an 8pt--stop the clock.

I actually prefer to run/rope in my cowboy hat and long sleeve shirt.  It makes things feel more important to me.  I guess I thrive on the pressure.  I am a firm believer in "you are only as good as your competition".  Not to say jackpots don't have wolves just like rodeos, but you don't have to run with those wolves to get paid at a jackpot, lol.

I think that may be part of some of the mental aspect for me. I know at the rodeos the wolves are circling. I know the horses/riders I am up against and their lists of accomplishments. I def need to work on focusing on myself, and having the best run "I" can have.

....and deal with the fact that at rodeos you need to be mounted on a rodeo caliber horse or you're just there to contribute and that ain't no fun.
