Ok asking for exeriance and advice here please...

My 12 year old daughters good mare whom we need for jr high rodeo, hocks are fusing. We have been to the vet x rays all that good stuff thats how we know this is the situation and there are no other issues. We did inject her at that time as well.

The mare is sound, we have her on msm, luberison and we run her on bute. I can notice that she is sore around her barrels and as a result she is clocking almost a whole second slower than she would normally clock.

Question is have any of you had sucess with getting the hocks to fuse faster other than surgery? Also anything i can do to help the mare feel good and able to perform in the mean time?

Thanks so much for the input

How long ago were the injections? Did you inject both upper and lower joints?

I would try to add adequan to the mix as well.

When my Red's hock was fusing, injections helped tremendously but did not help 100%. My vet suggested we also add Previcox (at the time ... now Equioxx) to help him, which we did and did help.

But more details on your case would be good.

How long ago were injections?

Are both (upper/lower) of both hocks fusing, or specific areas?

Did you also inject stifles? X-ray stifles?

Video?

How long ago was the "good" video? Obviously assuming she clocked on that one.

Mostly it looks like her feet aren't as quick in the turns in the recent video, nor does it seem like she's pushing as hard. She crossfires in the hind leaving each barrel (longer before she corrects herself on each subsequent barrel) but she was doing that in the good video too, so probably just "normal" for her.

Since injecting have you still run her on bute? She really doesn't look too back, but maybe the fusion still hurts a bit so she doesn't want to "push" as hard in the turn.

PHT Hock Wraps and cold Laser Therapy.  Always ice her hocks after riding/running.

I would forego the adequan, its purpose is to MAINATIN the good cartlidge in the joint. Once your fusing, that cartledge is gone, thats what fusing is. Pentosan Gold, Polyglycan, and Legend are better options in these situations in my opinion. All my young horses with no issues get adequan. ANy issues and I move to other drugs.

The run that she was clocking in was about 3 months ago. I do agree she isnt pushing herself as hard i think because maybe pain thats probably why slower around barrels too.

I did just purchase a cold laser to start using on her and my others.

Anyone had luck with any bone supplements to help speed things along?

Also we have been using ice tight poultice before and after riding..

Thought about starting her on previcox daily until x rays show her fused?
