I am in the process of trying to coax a horse’s mane and tail into growing. His current mane is super sad, and if his tail were a little longer, it would sure help his looks. If we are going to be in the arena for a long time, we might as well look outstanding. At least until we get faster, please tell me the good, bad, and the ugly. Products, processes, and procedures would sure help this clueless girl out. 

My daughters mare has a pathetic excuse for a mane.  I used Horse Guard Hair and Hoof, I think it's called, and noticable results in 2 weeks.  My daughter was gone during most of that time and mentioned it when she got home.  I've also had results with Hoof Maker, yes the hoof conditioner, kept in their manes, conditions it so it doesn't break.

I have not had exceptional luck with braiding or wrapping.  We dont brush manes or tail unless showing.

For the tail - Tail Boot. I only use Glycerin. No detangler or anything that dries them out. I have attached a photo of the tails - I redo them about every 2 weeks.

Really watch the ingredients in the products. So many things actually dry the hair out and cause breakage. Keep clean, dirt really affects the hair follicle as well, preventing good growth. I'm huge on the tail boot and Equifuse products. I keep my stud's tail up from March to August. I also try to keep his mane braided, but I don't over condition because it will collect dirt. As the braids start to come apart I clean and rebraid. In the end, genetics play a huge part in growth and texture. Gunner's mane is more human like than any other horse Ive had.

I've never had any luck on growing a long luscious name on my mare...but her tail? Yes! 

Like others said, a tail boot. I confess I've never paid much attention to ingredients in their conditioners. Curious what others tell you they use. 

When you say you keep it in a boot what kind? I always get concernred with doing any of mine in a boot due to them swatting flys and also getting it caught in a fence, etc. 

The Tail Boot has a fly swisher attached to it that is only attached via velcro so tht if it catches on anything it releases easily. 

Yes,my horses have got them caught and the twine just pops off, the velcro often stays on the tail wrap so easy to put the twine shoe fly back on.

I put my horses on purina supersport, it's been about 80 days I think, roughly anyway, I noticed the other day my horse in particular, his mane seems thicker and his tail actually touches the ground.. hes always had a scraggly mane and less than stellar tail growth... maybe a coincidence but I've been pretty happy with the stuff. I don't do anything else extra special other than make sure and braid up when we rope ...

Not sure who you meant. The appy above is fancy!!! Can't believe they got such a great tail on it. I grew up riding one with an ok tail.

My pali is by Firewater Finale and out of a Shoot Yeah daughter. He is a pig and dispises being clean and shiny. He poops in the top of his tail a lot so I keep it up when he is in the corral. The rest of the year he is in pasture.
