I posted about the ottb I got a little over a month ago. Well 2 weeks ago he cut himself in the pasture. Didn’t think much of it. But it started not healing right despite him being pretty much sound on it. So took him to the vet and found out he tore his superficial digital flexor tendon and slightly damaged his deep digital flexor tendon. We went ahead and shockwaved it and will go back in 2 months for another ultrasound and treatment. In the meantime, my vet gave me a program for wrapping, icing, BOT wraps, PEMF treatments, eventual hand walking, and gave me some anti inflammatory meds and stuff to put on his leg. We’re looking at at least a year of healing and intense therapy. Thankfully I bought him as a dressage prospect, so he won’t have a whole lot of wear and tear on the tendon like a jumper or speed event horse might have. I’m just so disappointed since I JUST got him and actually wasn’t planning on keeping him. Although we have started to bond so I’m ok with him sticking around now. He really is a sweetie. I just want to hear of success stories to help give me a little hope that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Also if there is anything as far as therapies, supplements, etc that worked for you I’d love to hear about them! I’m thinking of trying red light therapy. And I have unlimited access to a theraplate for free so might try that too. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I wish I had success stories for you but I don’t. I’ve had 2 with career ending injuries from superficial or deep digital injuries. Sometimes you can have all the money in the world and not be able to bring one back, unfortunately that’s been the verdict twice for me, vet told me mine had a slim chance even if money wasn’t an option for treatment. Use all the therapies you can and hope for the best.

I can't speak for torn tendons, but I sucessfully healed 2 collateral ligament tears (same ankle) with the help of red light therapy along with ultrasounds, multiple PRPs, magnets, and lots and lots of money.  It wasn't easy at all, but I did get to rope on him a little this year before he was just diagnosed with career ending DSLD (which is one of the reasons why his healing was so dificult in the first place).

I think it is sure worth a shot though in your case :)

Good Luck!

I had a gelding get almost that exact same sounding injury. Per my vet, we had him on stall rest for 6 weeks. Then included light hand walking for a couple weeks, then to aced limited turnout. Slowly more and more turnout and less and less ace. He has a nasty looking scar from it now, but it healed beautifully! We did keep it wrapped and iced every day/every other day. Always had standing wraps on otherwise. I think one of the biggest things that helped him :  https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/veredus-magnetik-stable-boots-evo-10750?utm_source=cpc&utm_medium=google&utm_content=nb_shopping_health_dsk_3p&utm_campaign=&utm_term=2109732131&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4Ondnp3b5AIVKB-tBh2IrAr4EAQYASABEgJZlPD_BwE    These boots we put on him every day. Started with a half hour, and worked our way up to a few hours a day. I could always tell that he felt better after having the boots on. You don't have to get these exact ones, but our vet recommended these. I stand by these boots though, especially with that injury. The gelding that went through this is 100% sound, and has had no problems since then. Good luck to you hun!

I call mine a success story, but others may not.

I had mine tear her left rear DDFT in multiple locations. I forget the exact word my vet used, but in at least a couple locations she had less than 50% of the tendon holding everything together. She was prescriped stall rest for a year, we did PRP in the biggest holes, wedged egg bar shoes to support the structures of the leg. Eventually we got handwalking approved. Then about 9 months in, we had a hurricane come through while she was still on stall rest. She had been looking good on hand walking, and I wasn't about to have 9 months go to waste if a tree took out the barn she was in, so I turned them out. She was sound then, and she's still sound now. She was a barrel horse, but the risk of reinjury is too great for me to chance her doing that again, so she's a pasture ornament/LIGHT duty trail horse. But I didn't have to put her down, so I call it a win.
