I've been feeding the same stuff for almost 10 years and I just got word that its been discontinued. I've heard good things about Purina and it's easy for me to get so I am considering going that route. Thoughts? For those of you that feed Purina currently, which feed do you feed and why? I kind of find myself leaning toward Ultium because it's closest in protein/fat to what my horses are eating now. Just looking for opinions. Switching feeds is stressful!

I love Purina.  I feed the Senior Active.  It's higher fat for my harder keeper.   I also fed it to my young horse because it was similar to Ultium growth.  She blossomed on it.

I was a diehard bluebonnet junky forever... I made a switch recently to Purina and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I feed the Senior Active, and add outlast to it. My older horse picked back up and sprouted dapples even under his thick winter coat. My 14yr old rope horse is doing great on it as well. They look really good... I'm feeding both about 4lbs per day. I switched because I wasnt happy with some things I was seeing and the difficulties getting fresh bluebonnet.. last few bags were full of weevils, I realize this is a feed store issue, but I got tired of driving further to return old bags and trying to get new fresh feed all the time. My close feed store is a purina dealer so they keep fresh feed in constantly and are really good about it. In my opinion,  Purina has really stepped up their game and I appreciate the research that goes into their formulas.

I LOVED Purina Ultium. Then I switched to the Enrich because they stay fat.  I add Omolene to my weanling’s feed.

Ive never had a complaint about Purina!

I feed Purina Omolene 200. I have been feeding it for 4-5 months. My gelding gained about 75# of much needed weight. He is nice and shiney, has dapples. he looks and feels great. His hoof growth has increased too. The new formula now has the Outlast gut formula in it. I'm glad I made the switch!

We feed Purina Strategy.  I had one that I sold on Impact Professional and plan to try one we have now on it in the spring - he looks good, I'm not sure if he's just suuuuuper laid back or if a diet change might perk him up a bit.

Thanks for the replies! I hadnt even looked at the senior active (because I dont have older horses) but I like that it's a little higher protein. I'm not a feed expert in any form, but the fat content in the Omolene is a little low to me...I've always been told fat is good because its easy to absorb and turns into energy. So thats a little bit of a concern. Maybe someone with more knowledge of nutrition can chime in and explain fat to me lol.

I feed Strategy and I love it. Horses look great, shiny coats, good hooves, etc. Only other thing I give them is mineral salt, a high quality free choice hay and grass.

I feed a 26-year-old TB half Omolene 200 and half Equine Senior each feeding.  It's a lot of feed but he looks great.

I love Purina!!  I feed Healthy Edge Strategy for the majority.  The hard keeper that is getting older gets Senior Active.  It provides him more calories to help fatten him up.

Purina puts a healthy coat on each horse, most of ours have dapples and long mane and tales, helps with tummy issues.  They have added Outlast to most of their feeds.  It helps reduce acid production therefore helping to control ulcers.  Our horses do well on it and look pretty!

Agree with everyone else! I won't feed anything BUT Purina anymore. My hard keepers are on omolene 200, and they all look fantastic! Ultium is another really good one also, just a bit more pricey. Good luck :)

I currently pay $21.99 for the Sr. Active, that's at the feedstore ... TSC carrys it for $23.99. They are always a tad higher than the feedstore. I was paying almost $27 for BB Omega Force.  I'm pretty sold on the Purina now, I used the coupons up from purina to switch my horses over. I just kept noticing my horses wouldn't eat all the BB theyd push it around and I'd always find a bunch leftover. I'm not sure if formulas changed or if it was a freshness issue or what. But since I've switched over, they eat every bit of the purina.

A lot of y'all know my backstory on Dan---he was on Purina for almost the entire 19 years I had him.  The last 5 were on Sr Active; it was a Godsend for him.  I lost him last year in July at age 39.  (The pictures are age 36, 37, and 39.)  Our current herd ranges from ages 12 to 24.    Two are on Sr Active, and three are on Strategy HE.  I LOVE my Purina. . . .

We have a 21 yr old stud that had really lost weight last summer. We tried every kind of Senior feed we could find, tried several different things & them switched him to Omolene 200 he gained a lot of weight & now looks great. I really like their new Outlast Formula. We fed Omolene 300 to our weaned foals this yr. We have feed it off and on to our weanlings over the years. Last year we fed them Purina Impact mare & foal. With the Outlast they never backed up a biy when they were weaned no hay bellies. I wondered if the out last helped them process their hay better.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I called and spoke with Purina yesterday to narrow down my choices. I had mostly decided on the Ultium Gastric but my feed store sells it for $29...so needless to say, im going to have to try a cheaper option. My second choice was the Strategy line - still kind of trying to decide between the Healthy Edge and the GX. They both have the Outlast which is great. It looks like the GX is designed to cover all stages of horses but that doesnt appeal to me because I have two horses with the same job, so I'm thinking the Healthy Edge might be the way to go here. Seems to have good reviews based on the replies here. * I wanted to add that I looked at the Omolene feeds but they only seem to come in textured and my horses tend to like pelleted better it seems. So I've narrowed down my choices based on that as well.

Crosspur, I'm glad you posted this because I might be breeding a mare next year and if so, I will need a good mare/foal feed. I will look into Impact when that time comes.

I don't feed a lot of grain. Usually just to the young or super old. I love Bluebonnet and have to stock up because it is 2 1/2 hrs away. But if I can't get it, I fall back on Purina. I have never been disappointed. I really like their Ultium Growth and the Senior Active.

I love Purina.  I would suggest that ask at your feed store who is the Purina rep for your area.  They are great about meeting up with you (I had one come to my place and look at my horses to discuss their needs) and coming up with a plan.  They looked the horses over for overall body score and we went from there.

These 3 are on the Healthy Edge.  This was during the summer when they were each getting about 3 handfuls a day.

Does anyone feed the regular strategy? I kind of feel like the Healthy Edge and the Sr. Active are making my horse too pudgy... he barely gets 4lbs a day right now and I feel like I'm short changing him on nutrition by not feeding near the recommended amounts.. even with plenty of exercise.  This horse has proved to be a very very easy keeper. I'm stepping up his exercise program but with the weather here it's tough to stay consistent, I'll get 3 to 4 days on then 3-4 off because of rain. I thought maybe switching over to the regular strategy might be something to try.

Yes, I have fed the regular Strategy. It is a very good feed. My horses looked great -- would not hesitate to feed it again.   Currently only have two horses -- one is a pasture ornament and the other is only lightly ridden.  Both get Purina Enrich Plus balancer and look great.  I have excellent pastures and hay so no need for anything other than a balancer.

Unless it's changed....... the omelene 200 used to be around 40 NSC so one of the highest sugar content feeds. Has it changed?

I have never tried the enrich plus. I have tried about every other RB out there and I just didnt like it... I dont have good pasture, especially right now, its dormant. My hay is so-so average I'd say... it varies from cuttings... I usually get 100 one cutting and then another 200 another cutting. I always end up having to add something to any RB I've tried in the past.. I'm kinda on the fence if I should try the enrich or just go with regular strategy without all the added fat. The regular strategy has the outlast in it too.

I did the 60 day challenge with my mare and strategy made her fat! I was feeding the minimum so that she would get the benefit of the outlast but it was still too much grain. I don’t have pasture but our hay is excellent and she’s a little cow pony lol. So I switched her to enrich and add the outlast.  I’ve been very happy with this combo for her.

Just an update - I went with the Strategy Healthy Edge. My horses are very easy keepers so they dont get a whole lot of grain. The Purina rep that I spoke with told me that if I'm not feeding 4 lbs a feeding that I would need to supplement some Outlast into their feed to be sure they are getting the full recommended dose.  Just FYI for anyone in the same situation.

Just want to say thanks to all that replied!

I keep a bag of the outlast in my feedroom to give them a serving before I ride or haul them anywhere, i usually dont add any to their regular feedings. I don't think the sr active even has the outlast in it
