I’ve been experimenting with homemade bread and starters.  I was wondering if anyone had a starter or some recipes for bread?

Was just thinking the other day that I need to make some bread!  Years ago when I lived in Africa, doctors felt like store bought bread was making me sick, one of the guys gave me his HUGHES TOOL COMPANY magazine. It had a story about the Pitchfork Ranch cook who made sourdough bread. I used that recipe out of necessity. It is still the bread recipe that I use. Basically it saved my life. (had salmonella food poisoning). Wish I could thank that guy for giving me that little magazine.  Google sour dough bread recipes

A starter is basically soured milk and other ingredients that will produce a yeast that makes the bread rise. When I was a teenager my mother got a starter from the neighbor which was like a piece of dough. That was pretty common to get a starter. No telling how old that thing was, probably years. My starter has always been more liquid and yes it was pretty yucky. My had flour, sugar and potatoes in it. This is the starter that the chuck wagon cook used on the Pitchfork Ranch. That is where you get sour dough bread. Pretty darn good.

So does it take just a pinch of the starter or does it ever run out?  Only bread I've made is in the bread machine.

It has been awhile since I have made bread but as I recall you use about a cup of starter. You do have to "feed" it once in awhile. You take out a cup and add new ingredients. You can use what you take out or throw it away.  Feeding it keeps it yucky!  You have to refrigerate it and it cannot be kept in an airtight container. It is kind of a lot of trouble but the bread is really good.

Sourdough starter is the easiest thing in the world. Takes a bit of effort to get going but once started it's easy as pie.

Flour and water, that's it. Nothing else, for sure no milk, no potatoes, no sugar etc.

Let me find the page out of the magazine and I will post it. It was given to me in 1972. I have several recipe boxes so will have to locate it. My favorite recipe is for Mueslix bread. Uses Mueslix cereal. I like bread with "stuff" in it

Just my opinion but I think the bread maker is the way to go.

https://www.americancowboy.com/.amp/ranch-life-archive/sourdough-biscuits-recipe

See if this link works. I googled Pitchfork ranch sourdough. This is the exact recipe I used. It will probably work in a bread machine. There is a certain order that you put the ingredients into the machine. Will google that one too to let you know.
Note this sour dough starter has sugar, and a potato. Some replace the water with milk.

Just for the record 1D soon. I have been cooking an evening meal for my family since 1967. I have a degree in Home Economics. Even though I live by myself I still cook almost every night. I think I have an idea how to cook almost anything and my exhusband used to say "if she says a ****ant can pull a freight train you better hook him up"

Ok the order for putting ingredients into a bread machine--- solids, liquids, yeast goes in last. I was afraid if you got one a Salvation Army it might not have directions.

I make a lot of white bread loaves, brioche, and a brown loaf bread that my husbands family in Belgium sent me the recipe for that you bake in a pot. It's so so good. Best thing for a winter lunch is fancy grilled cheese sandwich with homemade brioche and some kind of fancy cheese you can't pronounce. Yum yum yum.

I have a couple of books that I love: The Bread Bible and one from America's Test Kitchen that has a lot of good bread recipes.

Still trying to make croissants and the Cuban bread you can get in Tampa. The first few tests have been... not so good.
