I have been very blessed with my mares not cycling hard. Yes, sometime you can tell they are in heat (winking, squirting, squealing) However, mine have almost never gotten cysts or sore from their heat cycle. I can put up with attitude every now and then.  My young mare now is the first horse we have ever put on a regu-mate shot to help because she gets sore over her ovaries during that time. My vet gave me an option of a daily oral dose or a monthly shot of some sort of progesterone.

Best of luck with your mare! While geldings may be sweeter, my mares always seem to have more heart! PS – please do not put a marble in, I had a friend who did that with terrible consequences. Marble broke and tore her insides up :

Some people say a Raseberry Leaf supplments helps! Something like Mystic Mare by MVP.

I honestly don't like messing with nature at all... but I also know myself well enough that even though I adore the bloodlines... their horomones and mine will collide at any given moment... lol

I was thinking there was a shot given monthly... I didn't care to feed daily... this is for future reference when all my hair has been pulled out and beer no longer helps me cope...

My mare has been on regumate every single day for 4 years, even through winter :). she is an angel with it, and a total *()*)(*_)(*_)(*_)(*_ without. She will never miss a dose. Very expensive yes, but well worth it.

Let me ask this... is there any issues with breeding if you decide you want to breed one eventually...

My mares are actually sweet but have mercy they are making my boys nuts lol

I asked my vet about this and she said no, but when you take them off you have to let them cycle normally for 3-4 months. I will never breed mine though. ANd my mares heats were so bad she was in screaming pain and would lean up against a fence to get relief. SO super bad. Even with regumate she will cycle a little but nothing bad.

Yes, there is a monthly shot! I just started my 5-year-old filly on it. She wasn’t moody, just got sore. I run her once a month 7 miles up the road and the vet administers it. I chose this option because I am 28 and did not want to run the risk if my husband and I were to get pregnant and I am handling regu-mate every day.

My vet said there isn’t a long-term effect if I were to breed her down the road, however, I cannot speak for personal experience on that one.

My vet will only use the shot in non performance mares, I guess it can really sore one up where its given. Since I'm a guy I just use my gloves and have never had an issue with the regumate.

Have any of you had experience with spaying a mare? I don't plan on breeding my mare and she has painful cycles, I have done the monthly shot but am considering just getting her spayed.

Yep. One ovary was a mess. It really Did not help her. She still cycles. Apparently the uterus also produces estrogen.

Thanks for the discussion and info you 2!
I normally wouldn't even own a mare ( and its a personal preference, I KNOW there are some mares that just can't be beat)  but knowing my own personality, mares and me don't jive...

But I wanted to make sure that it wouldn't effect them later on in life if they ever were to get bred... I have NO plans on that either lol

And I was told to use gloves as well... and was like... will that stuff help with hotflashes?  lol
