Here's my take:

Anyone with any sense of objectivity is probably at least beginning to take a step back from this, and at least look at China (with or without Russia) with a jaundiced eye. No nation on earth can even come close to the US when it comes to military might. The economy goes without saying. China knew that Trump’s agenda on trade, intellectual property theft, and currency manipulation was the biggest economic threat they’ve ever had to face. They also were facing the prospects of another 4 years of a Trump administration. If they ever had something up their sleeve, now was the time to roll the dice. Their economy was already in decline. The Democrats were down to their last 2 candidates, both of whom were very flawed and not poised to defeat Trump....not with an economy like ours.

Oh...what to do? Enter the Chinese COVID-19. Sprinkle in a little oil war over Russian unwillingness to slow oil production. We hadn’t seen a bear market in 12 years. We were ripe. Trump quickly responds with the travel ban in late January, just 3 weeks after the virus is identified. His enemies here at home decry the move as “xenophobic”, but he continues it anyway. The media widely calls the virus the “Chinese Coronavirus”. or the “Wuhan virus”. But now, any attempt to identify the virus by its origin is said to be racist. Trump is the greatest threat to the continued economic health of Communist China in history.
He also is a huge threat to Russia, in large extent because of our energy independence and entry into the community of oil exporters. Oil is all Russia has.

One unintended consequence of this crisis is the realization that China completely controls too many vital products, like 98% of our antibiotics. People are discussing our unhealthy dependence on China for too many things. They are a little afraid of engaging in a robust discussion over this, because it sounds like “White Nationalism”, (as if race had anything to do with it!). There is a growing body of thought out there that increasingly is willing to say we need to look at this dependence on China. In fact, already there have been rumblings out of China that they could cut off our antibiotic supply.....read that again. That’s our Achilles heel.

So what are we to think? Is this novel Chinese COVID-19 just a random virus that evolved in dead snake meat? Is it just a coincidence that this virus has brought the world’s greatest superpower to her knees within 2 months? Is the additional catalyst of an oil war between Saudi Arabia and Russia just a coincidence?

Why would China (and Russia) want such a disaster? How could they benefit?
The answer can be found when you look at the question of who is their greatest threat?

Oh....and one more thing. Whatever happened to the growing crowd of Chinese protesters? Can you think of a better way of dispersing a crowd of protesters without firing on them? Me either.

And the liberal media has certainly picked up the chant that calling is the Wuhan Virus is racist quickly.... mind numbing.

Scott, I couldn't agree with you more. My humble opinion is this. I believe china made this virus as virus's can be man made. China hates their elderly, so this is a good way to wipe them out. China hates us. Our president stands up to them & has gotten companies in china to move back & make their stuff in the USA. Of coarse that would **** china off. Pres Trump did the teriff thing. That ****ed them off. When I was a kid I had been told about germ warfair. Bingo, we have that now. I am taking this seriously. No we are not panic buying, but we are stocking up on some things. Thank God we do our own beef, so we are good with meat to eat. If I have to go shopping I get in & out as fast as I can. I feel safe staying home on our little country home with the horses. Glad they can't get this  :)  Give Wilson a hug & smooch from me.

My question is why the panic over this to the level it has hit in the press at least. When you look at the stats on this compared to other strains from the past I just see no need to panic. Should we take precaustions ofcourse. Should we buy out Cosco of toilet paper and hand sanitizer just nuts. 325M+ PPL in the US 36 PPL dead to date. Why the panic I just don't get it. The one thing that this has done is bring out how sweared up our supply lines are. How stupid can you get to let anyother country produce our drugs let alone China.

I'd read that SARS was more of a threat than this is, and yet, I don't remember this level of panic over SARS.

SARS infected a little over 8000 people worldwide so hardly comparable to the COVID-19 outbreak.  Either this virus is much more communicable or there was a much better job of containing SARS

One thing this saga has taught me is that we really haven't realized is how we are so precariously dependent on China in so many ways.....I hope this serves as impetus to change that dependency.

I'd read that SARS was more of a threat than this is, and yet, I don't remember this level of panic over SARS.

SARS infected a little over 8000 people worldwide so hardly comparable to the COVID-19 outbreak.  Either this virus is much more communicable or there was a much better job of containing SARS

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-03-05/how-bad-is-the-coronavirus-let-s-compare-with-sars-ebola-flu

Here's one of the articles I found, if you're interested. Here's a paragraph where it explains why SARS infected less people:

"Then there’s SARS, which is both deadlier than Covid-19 and has a similar R0. Why was it wiped out in about a year, while some experts warn that Covid-19 may be around forever? Because SARS usually didn’t become contagious until several days after symptoms appeared. This meant that, as four British infectious disease experts wrote in 2004, “actions taken during this period to isolate or quarantine ill patients can effectively interrupt transmission.” They proposed adding another variable to disease-transmission models: the proportion of transmission occurring prior to symptoms. For SARS, this was less than 11%, probably much less. For influenza, it is between 30% and 50%, making it far harder to control the disease’s spread."

ETA - I should have clarified what I meant by threat - that if you contracted SARS, you were more likely to die than if you contract the corona virus.

The SARS virus was much more lethal, and it broke out in China in the winter of 2003, but it only infected 8000 people, killing about 800, for a death rate of 10%.  It looks like SARS was much more lethal, but the disease fizzled out over the summer.  Since then, there have only been a handful of cases reported.  There were about 25 cases in the US, with no deaths.  There's no real comparison, except SARS and COVID-19 are both Coronaviruses.
SARS is only important to me in that I hope that COVID-19 fizzles out over the summer, like SARS did.

This was a complete planned assault by the Chinese. Duhhhhh..... They would love nothing more than destroying the US economy amd getting Trump out. Sanders or Biden would be a dream come true for them.

Haven't heard that much about how Russia is being affected but I do know they would be adamant about closing their borders or letting flights from high risk areas into the country.  Let's hear the population call their leader a racist for taking these steps.
