I've suffered through too many bad movies.  What are your all time favorites and why?

I can't tell you how many times I've watched Bride Maids with the wife.  I prefer war movies but that's a no no in our house.

Quigley Down Under because Tom Selleck was gorgeous in this 1993 movie and it's just a colorful, interesting, fun Western.  What's that you say Dave, you're not really into gorgeous guys.  Trust me, it's still a great movie.

You can NEVER go wrong with a Ton Selleck movie! Monte Walsh is my favorite or his!

You also can't go wrong with a good Robert Duvall movie! Open Range and Broken Trail of 2 of my favorites.

I really want to see 1917. I might bite the bullet and pay for it on Amazon to watch it.

Sahara is one of my favorite go to movies.  2005 with Matthew McConaugh has history, action, adventure, and a little side love story to go with it.

The princess bride - GREAT MOVIE for the ages.

to kill a rainy day i get out gone with the wind or the ten commandments with heston.

Quigley is a classic.  You are right.  It's hard to watch most movies now a days because of the liberal stance of the actors, but they ARE actors and they do a good job in their roles.  We watched "A Star is Born"  (no not the Barbara Striedand version).  This one is more recent and stars Bradly Cooper.  Couldn't figure out who the gal was then after the movie we realized it was Lady Gaga.  Shocked.  But wow what a voice.  She can actually act too.  Sad movie but good.  Loved the singing scenes.

Please forgive me for I am an opinionated old lady, and I love you. I liked the first A Star Is Born better myself, I was disappointed in the remake and I think all the actors did a great job and love Lady GaGa.  I must say when she wore the meat suit I thought she was nuts.

The song "Evergreen" was one of the songs from my wedding in 1979.  Since we are still married that movie is very special to me.

Now I have a different take on actors (maybe they should stay out of politics... who knows) many of them got a lot of money pretty quick, some not having to work real hard other struggling for years.  Many of them have waited tables and had crap jobs for years trying to get a break.  IMO some of them understand what it's like to be poor.  I do appreciate those who put money where the mouth is and I pay attention.

Jimmy Fallon does his show from home with his kids on Facebook and tries to raise money for all kinds of charity has since they took him off the air.

Just like some of you want to bash actors and won't watch their movies.  Will you feel the same way about big business and what they do.  I'm not trying to turn this political at all.  I just notice who steps up and I'm very disappointed in some.  The companies who paid CEO"s $$$$ when they already got a great salary, don't come crying now.

Before any of this even started Brad Pitt has been building houses since Katrina and Charles Barkley is auctioning off all his trophies to do the same.  Charles said it's just stuff, if it can help somebody, I don't need it.  Those a just a couple.  Sorry to hyjack you can ban me if you want.  Thank you.

Sorry have to go I'm using that awful boxed hair color the stylists have been warning me about will make my hair fall out.

Gotta look good to sit at home.

Only been using it 40 years

Any John Wayne movies, but My favs are McClintock, El Dorado, and True Grit.

Basically I like it when the good guy comes out ok in the end I guess if I look for a common theme here.

If you want something thought provoking, watch the new Joker movie.  It was horrifyingly sad for me from my educational perspective from the Mental health standpoint.  It was disturbing and I could see how he ended up the way he did based on his past.  It was dark and I hope people realize that sort of thing happens a lot.

Movies I've watched so many times I can quote them line by line:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid -- "Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals"

Tombstone -- "I'm sorry, I forgot you were there.  You may go now"

Dirty Dancing -- "I'm doing all this to save your @$$, when what I really want to do is drop you on it"

Roadhouse -- "Polar bear fell on me"

Monty Walsh -- "You can't have no idea how little I care"

The Cowboy Way -- "One day never been east of Tulsa, next day BOOM I'm east of Tulsa"

I also guilty-pleasure watched Legally Blonde yesterday, lol.  It was on TV.

Did you see The Mule with Clint Eastwood in 2019?  It was really good!  Yes to the Upside also.  I just rented ford vs ferrari and thought it was a good movie.  Mr Whit however slept through most of it.  in his defense it was dark outside and he cut trees and split firewood all day.  lol

Hey fulltilt.... Did you know that the home of the rockford peaches (in the movie) is right here in lululand??  We still use the referbished facility for the high school baseball team (the one my brother in law coaches) that made their 1st ever state tourney appearences the last two seasons.  It also hosts a premier team for the wooden bat leagues in the summer.  The "Bombers" play a 40 game roster and have had several summer college students go on to play in the majors.  The summer baseball schedule at League Stadium includes the Peaches as hosteses and Casey as the team mascot.  Its a great family entertainment evening here in the summers in this nostalgic ballpark that was a big part of the movie A League of their Own.

This movie is incredibly old but absolutely as good as it gets.  I think it's from the 50's. " Friendly Persuasion" with Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire about a Quaker family during the Civil War.  When it came out it was the talk of the town all across America.

Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart is pretty great too.

We watched Captain Phillips a few nights ago. I really liked it

I'm sure Disney isn't your thing, but the new Aladdin is really good.

Olympus, Angel and London has fallen with Gerard Butler are all good.

The Heat and The Proposal with Sandra Bullock are always good for a laugh.

If you've got a crude sense of humor Shameless is a good one, not a movie but it'll kill some time.

Of course if you want to kill 12 or so hours you can watch Lonesome Dove, I choose to skip the snake part. . .

I've been following this thread pretty close. If this weather doesn't break and we stay grounded I'm going to need lots to watch.

Miracle of the White Stallions. (Sometime in the late 60's).  Take note of the political situation in the movie. On Netflix

Shindler's List. I watch this every year at Christmas. Keeps me humble. Good movie.

Bernie comedy about a murder that happened 10 miles from me!  Mathew McConaughy and Jack Black. True story..funny

The Man Who Broke 1,000 Chains. This is more of a drama. It was filmed down at the end of the road I live on which happens to be a dead end. If you had to go somewhere, you had to wait for them to stop filming. It was made for HBO.

ok we did this last summer with some 20 year old nieces and looked at oldies and had a blast with the current environment I am sticking with fun/light or romatic

Officer and Gentleman - classic

Killer Clowns from outerspace - Campy fun dumb but is a classic

Rocky Horror Picture show - Campy dump , but Dammit Janet will keep you singing

My Cousin Vinny, Dirty Dancing - sure you have all seen it, but still great

More silly comedy but classic The gods must be crazy,

The lord of of the rings series

Sure I can think of more - but some suggestions that you may not have thought or even heard of :)

We recently watched the Maze Runner series part 1&2 and I guess we are going to need to find the 3rd one somewhere - I can't believe I enjoyed it! LOL it kept my husband and I on the edge of our seats. When the first one was over - we were like we gotta watch the next one!

The Hitman's bodyguard - funny and action packed

Sylvester - really old movie about a feed yard bronc turned grand prix jumper.  If you can find it, its a good one.

Homeland - Jason Statham movie - action packed

American Sniper - Chris Kyle story - based on true events

Zero Dark Thirty - search for Osama bin laden

Lone Survivor - true Navy Seal story - Marcus Luttrell

The Mustang - based on the prison horse program in Nevada - (not sure if it is based on true events or not)

The Pacifier - big bad military dude babysitting kids while mom goes to business conference - just a cute, funny movie

The night of the grizzly - old western type movie - just love it!

300 - Spartan war type movie

The Last Samurai - Tom Cruise plays a military guy who embraces the samurai culture.

Anne of Green Gables - classic - watch anytime movie

All of the Rocky movies including Creed  - for some reason i love them - even though they are kinda corny. LOL

Book of Eli - its hard for me to describe without giving away the plot - its good -

P.S I have no idea why there is all this blank space below my reply -

The Stand   Stephen King the book was better

I hate to ruin a good thread but since the one discussing the virus is just bashing Joe Biden (who I said I didn't like) at a time like this. I think some need a wake up call.  It's OK for anyone but me to discuss anything political or hyjack over politics.

The Horse Whisperer

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series- there are 5 all together - computer espionage type movies - not kid appropriate.

My all time fav.... Broken Trail. It is by far the best western I have watched. Has Robert Duvall and I love him as a cowboy. Iv watched it maybe 100 times :

Its not a movie, but on Netflix is The Office and I have seen that a million times. Still makes me laugh. Parks and recreation is good too.

Who didn't fall in love with Gus in Lonesome Dove.  "The older the violin, the sweeter the music."

Dances with Wolves ... never realize how long it is because I'm completely entertained throughout the whole thing. Titanic, Phar Lap, For the love of the game, Bull Durham, Cocktail, Jerry McGuire (love Cuba) Persuit of Happyness, Urban Cowboy, The Sandlot, War Horse ...those are just some I can think of off the top and some we've watched over the last few weeks

Bull Durham minus the R Rated scenes.  Great movie.   Of course you are a baseball family so you would appreciate it.

Yes! We fast forward thru the R parts if the kids are watching lol! In all the movies ... unless they are on cable .. they do it for us!

My husband and I just finished up a series on Netflix called Containment... wow! What a great show.. seriously addicting.. last Friday we stayed up till 2am binge watching. Doesnt hurt that the lead officer inside "Jake" is super easy on the eyes lol! But seriously,  it's a great show and very entertaining. It is virus related and involves the CDC.

I really enjoyed 1917. .

It is rated R. . . just from the previews I knew it wasn't good for kids.

fatchance- The TS Spivet movie you suggested - I watched - LOVED it! good list but I havent got to any others yet.

I suggest:

Buck (the documentary of Buck Brannaman - good life story- good lessons-and it has horses in it lol)

Junior Bonner - old westerrn with Steve McQueen-my husband loves it

The Good Lie - with Reese Witherspoon (about Sudan orphans from Civil War-not a usual movie Id pick, but I really enjoyed it-funny parts, sad parts, those kids were so brave

Find Me Guilty - with Vin Diesel  (a true story Italian mob trial-longest trial in US History, where Vin Diesel's character chooses to represent himself -most of the testimony in the movie is from the actual trial transcripts-Vin Diesel did a good job - he was funny and endearing)

Stealing Home w/ Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster - pretty good baseball love story-my husband liked it (he's a sap and a baseball fan)

Family Man with Nicholas Cage - it's a Christmas movie, but hey- who couldnt use one right about now?  Normally it doesnt seem the Christmas season has begun for me until I've seen this- if you have your family, you are already rich.

Phar Lap -I remember going to Blockbuster and renting this with my dad when I was young - it look a long time to find one that wasnt $50 on amazon...but got it for my birthday last year- from Australia -it look alost 2 months to get here. Secratariat is really hard to beat but even that long ago, Phar Lap had some GREAT shots and great story.

Gotta add ----------Pain and Gain -- with Mark Wahlberg.. another not usual pick for me, but Ive watched it more than once -lots of funny one-liners.  ''The event you are about to see took place in Miami Florida between October 1994 and June 95. Unfortunately, this is a true story.. Action comedy. Fast moving.

And speaking of Mark Wahlberg---- The Lone Survivor - wow that was a great movie!

A Walk in the Woods - with Robert Redford - funny! Appalachian trail story

Grand Champion -this movie was wonderful!! - we showed it at church -and have seen it over and over - great message - lots of cameos from other stars (King George!) If you havent seen it, watch - very uplifting!

Valley Inn - a quirky movie, but cute

I bought the movie Phar Lap off AMAZON I never could get it to play because it was a different format from my DVD player. Friends could not get it to play either. I guess now is a good time to try it on Netflix

Yes there supposedly is something you can do to your DVD player, but I ended up  going to my parents' house and it played on their smart tv.

It also played on my computer at work...could try that....but I didnt know it was on Netflix-cool!

If you don't mind an I'd say acceptable overload of violence Four Brothers with Mark Wahlberg is pretty entertaining.

I watched Once Upon a Time......in Hollywood over the weekend.  Typical Quentin Tarintino brutality where violence isn't necessary and to a extreme but it does have its Brad Pitt moments.

Tom Selleck Monte Walsh is a favorite in our house as well!!!

Also, A River Runs Thru It (the scenery and the family dynamics are amazing) , Legends of the Fall (scenery, family dynamics again) Hope Floats ( my mom and I watched and rewatched that a million times so it always makes me think of her) McClintock or War Wagon (for giggles and good ol' John Wayne)  Tombstone (can never get enough of Doc's sardonic wit)

A lot of good movies out there.

Lord of the Rings, trilogy. I think it's available on NetFlix right now.

Any Marvel movie (Seriously, I think there are 26 now? So it would keep you busy.)

Any Pixar or Dreamworks film. A lot of them have adult humor and they often give you all the feels. I love UP, Despicable Me and Toy Story.

All-time Favorite: Gladiator; it has action, drama, suspense, romance.

Secretariat is also a good one, good for the kids and it tells an amazing story.. I'm not a big crier in movies but that one gets me every time.

Any Quentin Tarantino movie; not for the kiddos though! Kill Bill is super entertaining, Inglorious Bastards and Django are favorites. In Django, It was the best performance I have ever seen from Leonardo Dicaprio. There was even a scene in there where he broke a wine glass on his hand, it was bleeding quite a bit, and he just kept acting through it and they kept it in the film. It was only after the scene was over that they wrapped it up. He was definitely the memorable star of that movie.

Star Wars

Star Trek (newer ones with Chris Pine

Wonder Woman

AquaMan is a fun movie too.

La La Land, Very charming, well-directed movie.

Just to name a few..

"I have two guns, one for each of you."

LOL!!! Exactly Frodo...here is a sign I painted for a freind a few years ago on some old wood from our old chicken coop...  Rounders is also a Favorite at our house, we have it on VHS tape, LOL!!!

Trouble with the Curve       - Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake.

For the Love of the Game -  Kevin Costner

These are both great baseball movies with good life stories attached.

Rounders with Matt Damon and Edward Norton.

Molly's Game  (true story of Olympic skier who had to find another life after injury)

These are both about poker, and both fabulous movies.

If you want to watch movies that are a bit offbeat but entertaining Hi-Lo Country with Woody Harrelson and Rudderless with Billy Crudup are both worth watching.

Adding those to my list!

I posted a long list, already, but I keep remembering others....

So I'll mention separately --- St. Vincent with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy (Melissa plays a pretty decent woman/mommy in this - and Bill Murray does a great job acting.  The parts with Naomi Watts could have been left out to make it a less adult rated movie, but I guess it makes his change more impactful).

This is not a movie, but on youtube you can watch "Grandfather" - choose "Full Documentary" to show him living all 4 seasons ....VERY interesting the way he lives off the land and respects it- his simple tools - his work ethic. His beautiful piece of land.

Here a few of my favorite movies.

Last Flag Flying. (very good)

Spotlight. (Eye opening)

I,Tonya.(FUNNY)

A Beautiful day in the Neighborhood (He was a Helper)

The Best of Enemies (good message)

Gifted (really loved this movie)

Whip it (funny with a message)

The Young Prodigious T.S. Spivet (a good ride, with great cimematography)

Little boy (good feel)

Hector the Serch for Happiness. (sleeper movie, loved it)

Almost a year old...can't let this go into archives yet! :

Still tell people about TS Spivet - and they love it.

(Watched Last Flag Flying, last night.  It WAS a very good movie.  Better to watch if you're not tired and it is late...or if you are in a sad time :)   But very good and funny parts - really good acting!

Along those lines, other good movies I saw recently (military) -

Ithaca (lots of well known actors)

Taking Chance)

A Good Year with Russell Crowe is a good one we watched, recenty. Wine, good acting, good romance story

Rosalie Goes Shopping  1990    --- this movie popped into my head after I heard a turkey all weekend gobble.  It brought back fond memories of my Grandma who is deceased. We watched that movie a lot and we could never figure out the turkey gobble throughout the movie.  It took some serious meditation (lol)  before the name of the movie came back to me. I looked it up and it has good reviews - if you like "quirky" --- and it was clean.  After reading reviews, now I want to watch Baghdad Cafe, because the same actress is in it.

If you can find it - Phar Lap.  We watched it in the 80's when you had to rent VHS tapes from Blockbuster lol.  It was an excellent movie.  It might have been an Australian film.

This would be my list too!  But you have to add Somewhere in Time to it with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour

Yes, Phar Lap has been mentioned lots on here...one of the best! -  I  had waited over 3 months for it to get here from Australia for my birthday, last year--- in the past I always rented it from Blockbuster :)   it is an awesome movie - made in the 70's and somehow their racing shots seem so much better than Seabiscuit and some other more recent racehorse movies.

I'm going to have to look up that movie, lulu!

There are not that many movies where I will drop everything (even my phone) and just settle down and watch.  A few that come to mind:

King's Speech (definitely my number 1)

Tombstone

A Knight's Tale

Bohemian Rapsody (even if you don't like Queen or agree with Freddy Mercury's choices, it is still very well done)

I grew up on old school Star Wars and the ones that they put out in the 90's just sucked.  But the newer ones are pretty dang good.  Even my dad is a fan.

The Marvel movies (Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc) are also pretty funny.

Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji The Next Level are both excellent movies and great entertainment.

Something to Talk About is fun too.

Once Upon a Time.....In Hollywood is good but gets very Quentin Tarintino at the end.  He is, like Mel Gibson, given to extreme violence.

...and for a really fun Western can't beat American Outlaws.  Colin Farrell is great in this movie.
