I have a horse that I recently purchased that is a hard keeper. She also can be hot. She's had her teeth done and been treated for ulcers. She has free access to quality hay. For commercial feeds what is the best ratio of fat and the best ratio of protein to help her grain weight and also not be ready to fly a kite when we ride? I prefer to feed a commercial feed right now because of where I live it'll be easier with everything going on to get it in stock. Any ideas? Thanks!

What was she eating before you purchased her?

Protein doesn't make a horse hot. Thats like wanting to be hyper after eating a steak. Starch & sugar make them hot.

That said, triple crown senior. 12 protein. 10 fat. low starch. low sugar. high fiber. Never had a horse NOT do well on it. Idiots, laid back horses, founder prone ect.

Triple Crown Senior is 14% Protein- 10% Fat- 17% Fiber and 11.7% NSC

Really good feed with high protein/ fat AND a low NSC.

Fat in humans provides energy. In horses it helps in cell structure. I used to think that the only reason that you would need a high fat feed is for endurance riding but that is wrong. Make sure that you feed two meals a day. If you need some extra fat you can feed an extra meal of beet pulp but make sure you soak it. I feed my old hard keeper 4 lbs of feed morning and evening along with a couple of flakes of coastal morning ang evening. After trying all kinds of expensive feed I have found that a cheap pellet works just as well if not better. I do add a small handful of rice bran for extra fat.
