What do you guys feed on your grain free diet ? I deal with ulcers so bad . I am over treating them constantly .. something has to change ! I'm thinking about going grain free but I am nervous about it ! Looking for advice. My horses are currently on free choice brome & alfalfa hay . My alfalfa isn't the highest of quality is my downfall right now . I have beet pulp , Renew gold & purina impact professional performance feed in my barn right now . 

I feed pelleted feed from BlueBonnet "Equilene" and Triple Crown Lite. 

24/7 access to a good pasture; 24/7 access to bermuda hay.  My gelding gets 3/4 lb. Purina Enrich ration balancer morning/evening; mare gets 1/2 lb. Purina Enrich ration balancer morning/evening.  Both are fat, sleek and happy.  I believe in keeping things simple and keeping it forage-based. 

Renew Gold and Free choice Alfalfa 

Audie has been truly processed grain free since 2014. He has not shown any symptoms of ulcers. Happy as a lark and his vet has commented on him.

Free choice grass hay with some alfalfa when he is stalled out of the sun during the summer. I give 3/4 coffee can of alfalfa & 1/4 coffee can of beet shreds soaked am and pm. He gets GLC5500MAX for joints, Forco, THE Muscle Mass special made with chia seeds.

If I fed free choice alfalfa I'd have one horse so  fat she couldn't move & one so high I'd never be able to saddle her. Lol.  So mine get free choice grass or 3-way a small flake of alfalfa twice a day and renew gold.

mid you are treating for ulcers all the time. Have you treated for hind gut or leaky gut? Normally if re occurring ulcers it is related to one of those two. I've had to treat a couple different horses that have come into my barn with either Hind Gut program or GI Calm from Stride Animal Health. 

I've treated for recurring ulcers on a particular horse for 5+ years. Here's what finally is keeping them at bay: Renew Gold, lots of alfalfa (almost free choice, but I will cut back to a flake or 2 am/pm depending how much grass is in the pasture. In the winter, I'll have haynets full of brome incase he runs out of alfalfa.), 24/7 turnout, ADR probios daily and Succeed. (Free choice salt). 

Make sure you deworm regularly and use moxidectin for bots. Ivemectin resistance is out there and can mimic an ulcer flare up (or cause an ulcer flare up).

Im not sure where you live as far as what feed etc you have access to.  I used to feed Purina Strategy or another local 12-8 pellet but I got a few bad bags and got tired of worrying about quality control plus my horses werent looking good.  they have turnout on a good pasture about 20 hours a day.  I switched to Livengood nuggets (It is made in Lockhart, TX and is an alfalfa based forage with minerals and vitamins added) at about 3 pounds in the morning and 3 pounds at night.  I add in 2 pounds of Omnis alfalfa cubes twice daily.  I use the Omnis cubes so theres no waste and I dont have to worry about quality.  Its outstanding and because there is a little bit of oats in there they dont have to be soaked. 

I had one horse that I bought who came to me with ulcers which I didnt find out about for a couple of months so the vet recommended Purina Outlast and Platinum Perfomance GI.  I use the Purina Outlast with all of them and the one that had the scope proven ulcers Ive added Platinum Performance GI as well.  Ive talked to multiple vets since then and they uninanimously agree that Purina Outlast is the way to go.  Theres 1000 ways to do this but this concoction keeps mine looking good, muscled out, slick and SANE.  I totally agree with getting away from the grain.  Once you do it, you'll never look back.  Lots and lots of the barrel racers and cutters around here feed alfafa cubes only.

Those of you that feed renew gold , do you feed a vitamin & mineral supplement too ? Do they really one with it? Does anyone feed just a ration balancer & good hay ? I do have 2 hard keepers .. so I'm concerned they won't hold weight on just a lb a day . 

Mine have 24/7 pasture access; 24/7 bermuda hay access; and only get the recommended minimum of Purina Enrich Ration Balancer.  

The vast majority of Renew Gold users do not feed a Vit/min with it unless there is a specific regional mineral deficiency in the roughage portion of the diet. The reason you only need to feed 1 pound to 1.5 pounds per day is because the hay or pasture is now much better digested, contributing more calories and a corresponding lower need for more concentrated feed. 

my question- why is the Renew Gold a good subsitute for grain? What in the ingredients is better then say, just feeding alfalfa pellets and beet pulp (I just picked that randomly)?

I've had to redo my feed program for brother Dave. He sustained a serious injury February 18th. A result of that injury is many shots in his neck, and a lot of bute and drugs into his system. He became toxic, dehydrated, and almost got cholstrial myositis..(gas gangrene) Dave can't put his head to the left because of the soreness and extreme pain that put him in. They saved him with penicillin in his butt for 7 days..he tried to colic and he developed ulcers ... I almost lost him. I am changing his diet and I found so far anyway that Triple Crown  senior may fill the bill so I'm switching him from rolled oats in omolene 200 ..to Triple Crown senior, with his Platinum performance CJ and a daily previcox.

. I've increased his alfalfa and Bermuda and he is still under treatment for ulcers with gastrogard. It's been a ordeal for him and for me and an expensive one but I have a horse that's

I'm so glad he's Dinh better !! So scary :( it's funny you day that about the triple crown senior .. I had this particular mare in triple crown senior for a while .. she eats it so good that I never realized she was still fighting ulcers .. until I tried to switch her feed to purina impact professional . She got kinda picky with it , not cleaning it up , then she would .. then she just flat wouldn't touch it .. got really irritable all within 5 days of feeding it . It must have flared them & really brought it out .. so I am treating her with omeprazole .. it's day 4 & I put her back on triple crown senior .. she started eating it immediately when she realized it wasn't the other feed . She cleans up every meal happily . So my guess is triple crown senior does not irritate he tummy so she loves it . She will eat renew gold mixed in with it as well . 

Here is why Renew Gold is better than grain. All the ingredients have an advantage over conventional grain based feeds. We don't feed any grain. Once in awhile we will feed rice bran to one. I have tried handfuls of different feed programs trying to find the best and most efficient one and this year I feel like our horses look better than they ever have. We feed #1 alfalfa twice a day, 24/7 loose minerals/salt, and when one doesn't look to par we typically power pack or treat with Zesterra depending on the horse.  We are lucky to have access to really good alfalfa year around and that does make a huge difference. We don't have to feed a ton of the alfalfa just to maintain one because of the quality but we will free feed if we get one in that is thin. We have everything from 3 year olds to a 20+ year old. We didn't blanket everything for the first time this year and they still looked amazing all winter and are shed out and beautiful now. It was the best winter we have had on horses all staying up to par and I truly feel it is just quality hay. Sometimes we will throw big bales out in each pasture of a quality wheat hay we have access too as well just for them to stay full and snacking. Everyone alwayts asks me what grain to try to fatten their horse and my answer is always more alfalfa... I realize this doesn't work for every horse or situation but it works 99% of the time here. 

Horse are so much better off with out grain.  Alfalfa and quality grass hay works and maybe some vitamins or herbs depending on horse and activity.

Anyone find that Alfalfa make their horse hot? I don't have access to full pasture. On a high quality Brome Hay diet, Safe Choice Special Care, and Exceed. Thinking of trying to replace the Safe Choice with Alfalfa Pellets or Beat Pulp. We used to feed a lot of Beet Pulp, but had issues getting it consistently. Thoughts?

Yes, but it not only makes him hot mentally, but also physically. I know many people will tell me I am wrong, but before I fed alfalfa he was calm and no excessive sweating. Once I had fed it for awhile he got so anxious and had such weird sweat patterns and once the temps got above 85, he had full body sweat every day. I was told by vets and feed reps that I was wrong, it was NOT alfalfa and I should be happy he was sweating. He was miserable. Even had elevated respiration rates. I was feeding alfalfa flake 2 times a day, free choice coastal and Timothy pellets with Renew Gold. Finally decided to take him off alfalfa last October. Guess what?! NO excessive sweating and he is much calmer. I feed Timothy pellets, coastal hay and Renew Gold. He even sweated in the winter, but not this winter. We have several high 90 to 100 degree days with the usual South Texas humidity and he didn't sweat any more than the other horses. 

I'll have to see if we have any timothy pellets in the area. Thanks! He is horrible on alfalfa and I've got to be careful of the grains. He mentally can't handle it. 

I thought it was the oats in his alfalfa cubes that I fed. And he got a smidge better so I kept at it for another year, but nope, no real difference. I won't give him oats or grain he just falls apart on commercial feeds.
