| My horse had mild symptoms, limp tail and would cross her back legs while standing, otherwise no other signs. Never mis-stepped, slipped, etc. Had some loss of muscle along topline. Tested positive for EPM, started on Protazil immediately. Gave this twice a week for four weeks, gave 5 cc's of Vit E twice 10 days apart after we were done with the Protazil, now on Vit E supplement which I add to her feed every day. She will have this for the rest of her life. I never stopped competing with her. My vet said to keep doing what I was doing so she wouldn't waste any more muscle. I saw improvement within a couple of doses of Protazail, the limp tail and crossing of legs was much better but didn't go away completely until maybe a couple of months later? I have recently started accupruncture with my vet. She has been doing great but we decided to do some accupuncture along her rump and tailhead to help with the nerve endings and muscle. I felt a change in her gait the next time I rode her. I think the EPM can come on so slowly we don't realize it so when things start firing again I can feel it right away. Good luck, stay on top of things and communicate with your vet! Absolutely do the vitamin E after treatment! |
