I read a little about them.  I'm curious about things like cost, how long it takes to charge, and how long/far can they run between charges.  Does anyone know someone who actually owns one?

All I know is that you are pretty much screwed if you live where it gets below 32 degrees. You have to get double the expected daily travel as the batteries drain doubley fast in freezing temperatures. You'd better hope you never get stuck behind an accident or in a blizzard on a mountain pass because you'll have to be rescued.

Shucks!  So what will ranchers and farmers do in California when Gavin's mandate is enforced in a few years?  Will barrel racers just have to ride their horses to jackpots?

Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Semi, the company's first electric 18-wheeler. The truck is capable of going from 0-60 mph in five seconds, and has a range of 500 miles on a single charge.

Our son had an electric car that ran off a battery. It charged it's self as you drove it and if the battery ran down it switched over to gas. I hve no idea if the trucks would work the same or not

Does he have Prius?  We have 2  I love them as far as the room and driving it and the gas mileage.  but....so expensive to fix! If anything small electronic goes out.... crazy what they do lol  We got a great deal on my first one but wasnt 2 mths later generator went out and we replaced bc we got such a great deal so that made the value stay the same.  \

The batteries are high its not like you can go to walmart and pick one up!

the 2nd one we got super cheap bc hubby knew how to fix and what was wrong with it and we did tell her how to fix it so she can keep but she didn't want to mess with it.  thats only reason we got it!  We could make money on it but hubby wants keep both to save maileage on the trucks and cheaper to drive lol

but once these gone I probably wont get another but I do love the room in the back end!  I can get so much feed in there! and Hay!!! i got in trouble putting hay in there lol

This is my thought on the battery life, in really cold weather they drain so much faster and like SKM said if your waiting for anything to clear like accidents are get in a weather storm there would be a problem. And I wonder how they the body would whole up if you were in a accident, would they crumble like a tin can are or they built tough to beable to protect you in case a accident does happen. I know you can be killed/hurt in any type of car/truck but is your risk higher in a electric car/truck? The traffic is horrible in the Dallas, Houston, Austin areas I sure would not be wanting to be stuck in traffic in one of these.

Just imagine what will happen on the LA freeway during rush hour when you start getting a bunch of Volts running out of charge.

And California is know for all their power outages and it happens quite offten I hear. I think I heard that some place's can run their aircons for certain hours of the day.. So what happens if you cant charge your car/truck if a power outages happens. I just cant see relying on electricity to run your truck or car.

That's an affirmative on SpaceX. Impressive is putting it lightly. Has done in what, a decade(?) what NASA couldn't do in seven! At least NASA is smart enough to work with instead of against.

I don't know about in sub-freezing temps but, if you're not actively driving, the draw on an electric car battery is really small. It's why Tesla's can have things like "dog mode" where the a/c runs and keeps the car cool for hours.

Once they figure out the electric semis, I'd be reeeaaaall tempted. The sheer amount of torque they generate can get some weight moving quick-like.

I will start off with I am biased, I have owned diesel pickups for years and also semi-trucks. I have not owned a gas pickup for pulling purposes for years let alone trying an electric car for running around.

I think it would be wise to wait the electric pickup out a bit until it goes into mass production and the bugs get worked out. When manufacturers make an engine change let alone something as drastic as going electric it takes time to work out problems that didn't come about in their "real life" testing before production.

Elon Musk pushed back production on the Tesla semi after it didn't perform well. Freightliner /Daimler is looking at mass production but the mile range is low and I think the market is going to be pretty limited in the beggining, a poor choice here in the west in interstate commerce.

Then the $2,000,000,000 Nicola and GM debacle.

When CARB started their buyout in CA people thought they were getting ahead of the game and getting $50,000 towards a compliant truck, a lot of people didn't get their checks. I wouldn't be jumping on the electric bandwagon even if they offer a buy out no matter the state. I don't know if the option has even been brought up yet but usually that's the go to move to entice people to make a move.

One of the car magazines took a Telsla that was rated to pull a 5,000 lb trailer and rated for 500 mile range.   So that is what they did.  Drove it in real world conditions.  Ran out of battery at 78 miles.

So imagine you are sitting on the road in 100 degree heat  and out of battery with your horses in the trailer.

So they used to launch these big Saturn rockets for the Apollo missions and the space shuttles.  The first two stages would just break apart and burn up once they were used.  Space-X literally recycles and re-uses these.  They build these big barges that are drones, designed as recovery platforms at sea. They use rocket propulsion to slow the boosters when they are falling.  They then land the boosters onto the drone recovery platforms.  They save tens of millions in doing this.  This kind of ingenuity is the beauty of public/private partnerships. How cool is this?

When I go to the post office in the morning, right across the street is a charging station.  It must take a long time because people are either sitting there reading a book or leave their cars sitting.

Nope !!!!

That would be an excellent idea. Somebody should come up with that.
