I've been out of the horse game for a few years.  I've got a 21 year old horse that I plan on legging back up and trail riding on, and doing some casual team roping.  He's been used in the summer time.  He does have a knee chip, but it doesn't seem to bother him.  I doubt he'd pass a vet check (what 21 year old would?) but he's sound enough and feels good and should look pretty good in the spring when he's slicked off.  He's on a feed through joint supplement currently.  But I'd like to add an injectable, just to keep him feeling good and maintain where he's at. 

What intramuscular injection would you do for joint health for his situation?  Adequan loading dose? Just glucosamine?

For a horse that age with some issues, I would use Pentosan. Adequan is great for prevention or maintaining joint health. Pentosan is cheaper Abbas works great!

My vet had me switch my older mare to Pentosan about 18 mos back....I saw a massive difference in that vs what I had her on before.

My 16 year old is doing amazing on Adequan.  My vet put him on it to get through his feet issues, long story and I was amazed at the response I got with his hocks too.  I was able to quit injecting him and just kept him on Adequan once the feet issues cleared up.  I know all it is doing is managing any pain response he might have and I can live with that as long as we keep going down the road making the barrel races.

Every horse will be different. Adequan helped mine that had arthritis problems. Then switched to Pentosan to try it and it helped WAY MORE. I gave him the loading dose and then give it to him every 2 weeks. He is not stiff for warmup at all anymore. I'm downright amazed! And really, it's dirt cheap.
