Hey everyone,

So long story short, my mare is currently having to have a diet change to a lower protein diet. We have had to cut her alfalfa intake in half and increase her grass, she does have a slow feeder with Bermuda in front of her 24/7. Due to some health issues I have pulled her off everything at the first of the year as directed my the vet while she had some antibiotics/probiotics/liver support/liquid vitamin E. She is now just on Vitamin E and the vet has given the Okay to slowly bring some protein back but she suggested feeding something with a little higher fat content, hence, Renew Gold. I have been trying to get a hold of a Renew Gold Rep for a few days now and I have not heard back from them, as this whole low protein diet thing is very new to me and I wanted to ask some questions.

I was feeding her BlueBonnet Intensify Omega Force before I pulled her grain and I am planning to start riding her/getting her legged up for the next season here in another couple months (Vet said that she is ready to ride). But for those that feed Renew gold, do you feed it with another grain source? Or do you just drop the grain and feed ONLY renew gold, and do they still get all of those vitamins and nurtrition that they need to perform as they would with a full performance feed? Also are you still able to feed your other supplements with it?

I feed Renew Gold, some chia seed and they have a Redmond rock hangin on their pen (which they love).  Healthy, shiny, and maintaining good weight.  I have one mare this is kind of a hard keeper and I can't feed her much alfalfa because she turns into a dingbat and she does really well on this.

The key to RG is a good quality hay.  I feel like everyone should get their hay tested to know what they really have... just because it looks good doesn't mean it is packed full of what they need.

I feed good bermuda in a slow feed net 24/7 with 1 pound of RG and 2 pounds of alfalfa pellets (both of which are split between 2 feedings).  With that I feed half of a serving of California Trace Pellets to balance out my copper and zinc for feet health (we have high iron here) and add some vitamins and yeast for the gut.

You said you are feeding a little alfalfa in addition to your slow feed.  That will be a perfect combination to RG in your program.  Without knowing the trace mineral content of your hay though you really cant know if you are providing everything they need.

My favorite all around supplement is MVP Exceed 6 way.  When I feed that I just go with the half dose to save money.

I feed my RG with beet pulp shreds and sunflower hearts and chips, and western alfalfa as my hay. I can't say my feed bill has lessened, but the horses are all fat and wooly (or shiney in the summer) and seem very happy with this feed program.

This sounds familiar, so I believe that I talked to the OP yesterday. I think we are good to go with her program. Sorry for the delay in catching me. Lots of projects going on right now.
