Do you feed your pregnant mares Renew Gold? If yes, how much and what do you add to it?

I switched to rg last year during March with a mare due in May. I switched her over slower than the rest of the horses so she was just totally switched over about the time she was getting ready to foal. I feed beet pulp shreds and sunflower hearts and chips to everyone so hers was the same. She bagged up, foaled and nursed as usual. The mare got the maximum amount (1.5 lbs) per day through her nursing.

Thank you! I have a mare who is on it now, at 1 pound per day (she's got a very light work load). She is a maiden mare, and we're breeding her in April. I was wondering how much I needed to up it, if any.

I don't increase feed until / unless the mare shows a need. That usually happens about 7-8 months in, if at all. I'd rather up the hay than feed, but your mare might need the 1.5 lbs toward the end. And I almost always lessen any non-hay feed about a week before foaling and let them have pretty much free choice hay, then add the bucket feed back after foaling.

I like a mare to go into foaling with a little extra weight, but being obese is not good.  Most of my broods have required very little increase needed, tho I had one that it took almost double feed to keep that plumpishness!

Thank you, this is super helpful!

Most broodmares get between 1 pound and 1 1/2 pound of RG per day. If you continue to feed RG after they foal and have taken away grain based feed during the foaling foaling heat you will not see diarrhea and an easier breed back.

Hey Win - you're right about the no scours. This years filly didn't get but one days worth of soft poo but no scours. I didn't breed back due to late foaling so don't know about breedback. This mare cycles very weird so we'll see if this year she breeds easier. She's been on rg for a solid year now.
