I've been giving my 12 year old mare total equine feed for 2 years now and she seems to have been doing great on it but I'm curious to see what others opinions are on it. I don't give any trace minerals or any supplements other than maybe joint supplements since the feed says it's not needed.

I've heard it referred to as "Total Decline" ... but, if you're horse is doing well on it and you are happy with it, then I'd stick with it. I think it really depends on individual horses... some people hate it, others love it! Same with pretty much every feed out there. If you are fortunate enough to find a feed you like and your horses do well on it, you're ahead of the game imo... I've tried many different feeds and have had some ok results down to terrible results... I'm about to give up feeding any hard feeds all together because I can't seem to find one that I absolutely love for this particular horse I have.

I don't have an opinion on it.   I have a feed mill make my own feed.   Livestock all need  about the same basic feed ingrediants.   They all use something as a carrier agent to get the basics into the animal. It doesn't take 6# of a feed a day to get the basics into a horse.

Agreed... I dislike feeding any more than 4lbs pr day of a hard feed... then you are told you aren't feeding enough to get the very minimum requirements into the horse... then you must worry about contaminated feed unless you chose a feed from certain places... its all craziness ... feeding has gotten so complicated
