| My horse is doing better after his severe rabies shot reaction. That wanted to do some testing. Low titer for EPM and low titer for Lyme, she said she wasn't worried about those two things. I guess she did a test for HYPP. On the back of his quarter horse papers it says N/H. She just emailed me this morning saying he tested positive for carrying the HYPP gene N/H. He is 8 and has never shown any symptoms of it. How worried should I be? I did not know anything about N/H when I bought him. It was never mentioned.

thank you! He gets free choice hay 24/7. I have him on alfalfa pellets, which I should probably stop. Nutrena top line balancer, and Max e glo. I have heard really good things about omolene grain for managing. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Whats the bloodline on this horse? I had a HYPP gelding back in the 90's he was a Grandson of Impressive, my gelding could not have sweet feed of any kind the molasses was a big no no. You need to feed this horse feed that is really low in Potassium, no corn added even in pelleted feed. You need to look into Triple Crown low Starch feeds or look into Bluebonnets Ex Factor. Make sure the alfalfa you feed is not high in Potassium, I know older alfalfa hay with more stems would be lower. Feeding horses like this can be tricky, I have a IR gelding and its been a trip with him learning what he can and cant eat. |

Do you have any recommendations on an equine nutritionist? My vet recommends a purina nutritionist. But I'm assuming they are just going to recommend all Purina products. Very very new to this, so I want to do things the right way but don't have all the knowledge. |

Call BlueBonnet's nutritionist, Jyme Nichols shes the Director of nutrition, I think since Bluebonnet mills Triple Crown Feed she can give you some pointers on which way to go on both of these feeds. Shes a really nice lady. If you google her lots will come up about her being a Nutritionist and she's on Facebook. I dont have her number but you can call Blueboonet feeds and have them connect you to her. Heres BlueBonnets number 800-365-2456 |

Location: Texas | You can probably go to the AQHA website and get some good info on HYPP. This can be managed. If your horse is showing symptoms of HYPP ask your vet about putting him/her on acetazolimide (not sure I spelled it right. There may be better drugs out there now!) I showed halter horses and had several N/H horses. Some had symptoms some never did. I had one mare who was a seizure having sucker but with meds she was OK. |

| No, he's 8 and has never shown any symptoms. Vet just wants to get him on a low potassium diet. Going to stop the alfalfa pellets. I've been reading the triple crown low starch grain is very good. Vet hinted towards omolene but it's textured and I didn't think excess molasses would be helpful? |

I think this was in response to my post about Dr Kellon so if so, there is a "Consultations" tab on her website which has her information or just email her at drkellon@gmail.com |

| Despite all the research I've done lately, I still feel very lost on trying to switch him onto a different grain. Am I truly just looking for a grain that is very low in potassium? Is there anything else I should be looking for in a grain? I am looking mainly on chewy.com because there is absolutely nothing even remotely close in my area besides tractor supply.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would like to start him on a different grain here as soon as possible. My vet just said to try one of the omolene grains. But I thought what I was reading corn wasn't good for HYPP horses? |

Location: Dubach, LA | I realize how lucky I was but my N/H gelding never had any symptoms. I had a breeding certificate but no papers on him. When I found out about HYPP I sent hair to UC Davis. Yep. He was N/H. I immediately changed to SafeChoice Original. (Vet recommended) I don't feed alfalfa anyway. I hope you're lucky too. |

| Yes, I feel very lucky right now that he has not had any symptoms. Just want to do what I can to help him. I can't find the potassium level on the safe choice original. Do you happen to know? |

Location: Texas | I fed Omalene 300 and oats, they got good grass hay and alfalfa. I made sure they got fresh water, a salt block and exercise. I also kept a bottle of Karo syrup handy in case one did have a seizure. |

Does the omolene 300 have molasses in it? Is that a no no? Do you feed whole oats? |

I thought it was only Impressive descendants that could have HYPP. |

Location: Texas | This horse traces back to Impressive. I believe the bottom side. You can look up his dam on All Breed Pedigree. On the bright side, a lot of Impressive bred horses can run like stink!! I personally like them.

Location: Texas | Yes Omelene 300 has molasses. I fed it with crimped oats. Typical halter horse diet! LOL You can try him on rolled oats. Honestly I didn't feed the N/H horses any different than the others.
