So today my big gelding was diagnosed with a mild case of laminitis. We are removing all alfalfa and he will be on grass hay. Only supplement I use is my curost. He is normally on 1 pound renew gold. What can I use to mix his supplement since I've heard not to give anything with rice bran in it!?!  I've put in a call to winwillows. Hoping he can shed some light. I've never been in this position before. Thanks. 

Possibly Timothy pellets? Doesn't standlee make those and are available at tsc. I'm not sure if that would be ok or not since alfalfa is a no go. Or maybe beet pulp without molasses? Rinsed and soaked. I know when my daughters horse got laminitis we had to soak his hay before feeding it. I don't feel like we did anything right when that happened, so much conflicting information out there and the vet only recommended purina well solve for him which he 100% refused to eat. His case wasn't mild though, it was extremely severe. I wish you luck with your boy. 

Do you/ Vet knows what maybe could have caused the trigger of Laminitis? 

On my IR gelding I have to be careful of feed and hay and supplements, hes got to be on a low starch and low sugar diet, and I have to be careful on the quailty of hay too, hay can be loaded with sugar if its been fertilized. I try to keep the older hay on hand for him. And supplements I have to watch too, the only supplements he gets is for his Laminitis issues and another for his breating issues (allergies).

Yep we have a theory we are pretty sure if that caused it. He is a big horse 1300 pounds plus even in shape !!! He gornhis hocks injected 2 weeks ago and it was the second time they had been done. First was a year ago. We think he had maybe metabolic issues his whole life and we never knew it. The steroid in the injections he said may have been the trigger. We sent blood work yesterday as wel Fo test for that. Vet is confident he will fully recover. Sure hope so ! He only gets curost as a supplement so zero sugar. 

I recently quit alfalfa and RG after feeding it for over 10 years.  It makes me sad to do so, because my horses have done so well on it. 

I haven't faught the battle of laminitis, but am trying my heart out to be barefoot after the only acceptable farrier that would haul to me moved away.  I am currently just doing timothy pellets and triple crown ground flax.  If my mare can't hold weight on this then I will add in coolstance copra.  That would be as close to RG as I can figure. 

You may want to soak your timothy pellets though to get a little more sugar out.  Depending on your horse's work load, flaxseed oil would be another high energy, non inflamitory option.

I can't wait to hear what winwillows has to say.  I really value his knowledge.

Same thing, didnt know my Gelding had Metabolic issues either. He was getting good pasture along with good feed and thats what trigger his laminitis, didnt know this for almost a year, vets here in town kept saying abscess thats why he was getting sore, finally had enought of them since they really didnt seem to care so took him to Retama and got better results with Dr.Huffman, should have just gone to him in the first place instead of wasting time. So for now on I rather drive the extra miles and fight the traffic so I can get the best of the best of Vets. Dr. Huffman has been a life saver in many case's for me and my boys. He really has taught me alot about Metabolic horses. 

Metabolic Issues can be a tricky thing. Hope that you have good results in what ever you do.

If you suspect your horse is metabolic and had a laminitic incident I would definately contact Dr. Reilly with Equine Medical & Surgical Associates. At the very least look at their website. Just curious...can you still run a horse with laminitis?

According to my vet, if all goes as to plan, he said my horse would be running by July! That's only about 30 days. But everything I have read is that it takes a year to grow all new hoof so just not sure yet. 

My gelding had it from severe white line . We put him on the triple crown lite. It is a low cal feed & made for horses with laminitis. My horse eats it well along with his O.E. hoof stuff & his immune booster. You might look into this feed. The vet I use who was recommended by my regular vet is is a foot vet & farrier " he is fantastic " looked at the feed & is happy with how slyder is doing on it. If it wasn't for Dr Pittman, slyder would of had to be put down.
