I mentioned this before, but some people missed the post, and I have recieved a few questions about the white analysis change on the back of the bag.  After two years of testing, we have done a formulation upgrade to original Renew Gold. This change is the result of the increased effectiveness that we have seen with the base Renew Gold Senior formula. The formulation change increased both protein and fat levels, Lysine levels and total calories. Starch and sugar remains at a similar contribution to the original formula. The end result is a more concentrated grain free feed that is easier to digest, provides more digestible energy and fits perfectly in the horses digestive system. Every Renew Gold sponsored rider has been running on this basic upgrade for the last two years. When I do feeding seminars I am often asked if there would be a next generation upgrade to original Renew Gold. The answer is yes, this is it. We have not renamed the product, as we feel that this is a pure evolution of the original formula based on what we have learned since it's introduction.

Thank you!

How is "effectiveness" measured?

As a horse nutrition geek and lover of RG, can you further explain the differences?  Does it have more or less rice bran? And other ingredients?  Very curious!

Thank you!

I don't mean to be vague, but our exact formula ratios are propriatary, and we strive to give our compitition as little knockoff information as we can. Those ingredient relationships are vital and not accidental or cost driven. What I can share is that actual protein is up to 17% and fat is now 18%. Digestible energy is now close to 2000 calories per pound. Lysine levels are up 70%. Real world imporvements.

The new formula is delivering now. Analysis section on the back of the bag is white instead of black on the new. No change over procedures needed. It is a direct replacement. You may find that you can feed a little less of the new formula.

Just curious Win, but why did you feel the need to upgrade a feed that was already doing what it was supposed to be doing?

Great question. To answer that, there needs to be a little history lesson.  When I formulated Renew Gold ten years ago I used 25 years of experience gained from the development of Stabilized Rice Bran as a straight grain replacer for performance horses with our label "Natural Glo". We sold that company in 2006, and I had semi retired. I formed a consulting company, W solutions, and formulated products for a number of US equine feed and supplement companies.  I was approched by a company in Australia to consult on the marketing of coconut meal in the US. While I passed on marketing that as a pure product, I did see a very unique relationship between SRB and coconut where each one seemed to fill the other ingredients potential nutritional holes. The result of extensive blend testing using those two ingredients as a base, resulted in Renew Gold and a reentry for us into the marketplace with a product that did things that nothing had done before. That was ten years ago, and the Renew Gold results speak for themselves. I always said that when a more effective formula came out, that it would be from us. Ten years of experience, and several million bags of Renew Gold sold showed us ways to modify the formula for better nutrient uptake and more energy density. The first step to this was the formulation, testing and production of Renew Gold Senior. Now, we are applying what we learn to make, what I feel is, a superior product to our original formula. If we find a way to make your and our horses better in the future, you will see an evolution again. For now, this is simply the absolute best product that I know how to make to replace excess starch and sugar in your horses diet, and help the digestive system function as effectivly as it evolved to.

Thanks, Great wife (48 years) family and 6 grandkids keep it all fun.  My background is Bio-Chemistry, and it is a passion. Ray Hunt was a very close friend, and he always said that he did what he did for the horse. I would never steal a statement from Ray, but that man thought right.

If for any reason that I could not get my BlueBonnet feeds that I'm using now I would definitely come to you and ask questions and give your feed a go. You sound like someone that is very trustworthy, I hate changing feeds when its working for my horses, I have used the same diet for years now and do use Triple Crown Lite for my IR gelding, so I have no need to change up things. But sometimes things happen.

Thank you Win

BlueBonnet is a good company. I believe that they do most of their feeds as fixed formula, and they manufacture in a "clean" mill. Different approach in some ways, but pretty well made products.

500100100

Just a note here if that's ok.  I have been feeding RG to my perf horses along with alfalfa for close to 4 years and it's been great.  Horses look great, no health issues, no colic etc.  UNTIL just last week I bought a bag of RG......after two feedings I had a mare colic on me.  It has been YEARS and YEARS since I've had any horse colic. Now I think I know why.  If a feed company is changing their rations and or formula this drastically, horse owners need to know this so they can slowly introduce a horse to the new feed or make a decision that maybe the new ration/formula isn't going to work for a certain horse.  $1500 vet stay and huge scare and the ONLY change to her routine and diet was the new formula. Which I had no clue about.  She now won't eat it (thankfully as I guess I will take her off of it).

I admire that the company wants to always make their product better, but had I known the formula changed this much I would have slowly introduced it to my herd.  There needs to be some way to mark on the bag BIG AND BOLD something informing your public/buyer of the new formula so we as owners can make an informed decision.

Not bashing AT ALL, just wish I had known this and if it can help anyone else, even just one horse, then it's worth putting out there.  I don't get on this forum often, so how are buyers going to be aware without something that jumps out at you on the new bag or something.  JMHO

We have tested the transition to the new formulation extensively over two years with absolutely no issues. If you look at the back of the Renew Gold bag, if the ingredient and analysis is a white applied sticker that is the new formula. If no sticker, it is the original formula. Please pm me the blue ink lot code on the bottom white sewn tape strip that seals the bottom of the bag. I am not dodging anything here but there could be other issues. We simply have not seen this in any way, but, every horse has different sensibilities.

Oh I am not suggesting the new formula caused the colic, just suggesting that maybe you should put something on the bag such as "NEW AND IMPROVED" or something that would alert a buyer that it's changed so they can slowly introduce the new feed.  Yes every horse is different.  I am sure the feed is great, but anytime you change feed up in any horse there is a decent chance of colic.  That's all I am trying to say. :-)

Yes, I understand your point. I would still like the lot number from your bag anyway.
As to the change and highlighting it. Renew Gold is fixed formulated. Ingredients are printed directly on the bag, and manufactured exactly the same every production lot. Even with the reforulation the changes are a refinement in that fixed formula rather than the difference that you see from bag to bag of any feed product that is least cost formulated by almost every national brand of horse feed.
While it may qualify as "new and improved" by other manufacturers standards, we have seen it to be a very safe evolution of the same functioning product that in extensive testing has shown no requirement for a transition process.
That said, it may make sense for us to make a bigger deal about the change. I hate the hype that comes from companies that cheapen a product and try to make you feel that the change was made for the customers benefit.

Win so the new formula upgraded feed bags will have a different listing on the back thats in white background? And the plain Renew Gold will still be the same, as in no white background? Do you have a simple you can post on here to show folks?

I have 2 more questions for you Win, I have been looking for Treats for my Metabolic gelding and saw you have a Renew Gold Bisquits, would they be ok for my gelding, he loves treats when he gets pulled out for riding and his baths but I worry about the other treats thats out there, worried about the sugar that alot of them have. So I was checking your Bisquits out

And another Question, I remember the thread on how to measure out the Renew Gold and I think someone said that theres a Renew Gold Measuring cup to measure out the RG so that you would not have to be guessing how much you are feeding???

Hey STX! I'll take on the measuring thing . .

I got a 16 oz semi transparent plastic cup, got out the scales, filled and made marks on the cup at 1/4 lb, 1/2 lb and 3/4 lb, which is half of the normal feed amounts (assuming splitting daily amount into two feedings) with this system!

Cool deal!!! I tryed that a long time ago and I could never get it right, lol..So I was always adding more

Last year I found these at TSC and they always seem off to me so I would weigh the amounts on my little scale and always a few oz's off one way are another (I think its my scale). So I wonder are they true to the weight of different size pellets?

I am out of the office. I will post pictures both here and on the web site (renewgold.com) on Monday. The white area on the back of the bag will be the area that says Ingredients and the guaranteed analysis underneath that. 4" wide by 5" tall, can't miss it if it is there. Not much is out through the stores as yet.

Win,

I also have a question, why Diatomaceous Earth added to the feed?

a small inclusion of DE helps slow down parasite development between regular deworming treatments. This in turn allows a certain amount of improved digestive efficiency by lowering the parasite activity. The inclusion is very low, but effective in maintaining an efficient hind gut. This is not a replacement for regular parasite control, but a disruption in their life cycle that can positively reduce overall infestation.
