Has anyone ever turned a horse out with a dilated pupil, with a fly mask, covered on that side? 

With a Dilated pupil, I would keep under shade at all times. How long is the pupil going to be dilated? And why!! Just curious

Poor guy had a blade of grass stuck in his eye, not just on the eye, in it... 

Vet said the dilation can last up to 6 weeks... blaaaaaaaaa lol (he said it could last a day, a week or 6 weeks..) 

but the eye looks great, we have kept up during the day and when the sun sets we can turn him out. Just would love to turn him out, with possibly covering that side of a fly mask

Like stuck in the eye ball?!!! 

Yes... We had to sedate him and remove it with tweezers!  smh... Never had that happen before in my life!

How deep was the blade of grass?

Certainly, trauma and/or inflammation can cause a pupil to be dilated and it can stick around for a long time, but I would think so long as you have adequate UV protection (that dilated pupil is going to let in more UV light) and the horse seems comfortable, I don't see why not. The most important thing would be the UV protection.

I'm not a vet, but I am a human eye doctor. (and I dilate my patients all the time on purpose......)

Wow thats crazy!!! Poor fella, that had to miserable for him. I know when I have had my eye dilated years ago the Dr. gave me some ugly really dark glasses to wear and told me to stay out of sunlight untill my eye went back to normal, my eye was really sensitive for awhile. Being an eye and how things can go bad real fast I think I would just keep what you are doing untill things go back to normal for him. 

He gave me Atropine and I used it for 2 days. 

And the anitbiotic ointment for a week, I think it was just far enough in there to be stuck,  but I am sure that was just enough to be painful.

I do worry about him getting the mask off so I am torn... lol... 

Horse seems totally fine, eye is wide open and no watering... just that pupil is still dialited 

Thanks for the input... I asked if there was a reversal drop for it and there isn't... but someone needs to make one lol

I keep telling myself to be paient in the process... but I never keep horses up... so its a tough one for me... lol

It's been a week and a couple days... the pupil is less big, but still at I bet 70%

I would give it a few more days and hopefully the dilated pupil will be smaller by Wednesday. I'm the same way I hate keeping up horses, I have one that dont get to go out much since he cant have to much green grass because of his IR issues and I Hate IT!!!!

Atropine does not last for 6 weeks. At the very most, 2 weeks, but that's unlikely.

So you pharmacologically induced the dilation -- not due to trauma.

Sounds like the blade of grass did not penetrate INTO the eye itself. Just embeded into the cornea. (there's a big difference there)

Really, a normal blade of grass is not going to be stiff enough to penetrate all the way into the cornea. A stick maybe. Or the stalk of tall grass. But not a blade of grass (Too flimsy).

Sounds like your horse will be just fine in a couple days.

We are on day 10 from when it was removed.  Vet said it was in the eye, IDK, I was trying to hold his head up and still lol. 

 It was dialited pharma. not from the grass.  he said it could take up to 6 weeks, and this is the 2nd week in and that sucker is still almost completely dialited ... sighhhhhh

Update, took 2 weeks to the day to be normal... just in case anyone needs this in the future... ;)

A year and a half ago one of my gelding got a foreign object in his eye.  Was not found in any exams.  Started with treatment as if scratched and progressed to surgery to debried and pull a graft over what appeared to be the start of an abcess.  Found the still unidentified object during surgery.  Eye was leaking fluid and had to be reinflated with hylaronic acid.  The graft ultimately failed but he did recover after a little over a month of round the clock treatment every four hours.  

My 4 year old went blind in her right eye 2 summers ago due to cataracts. She is currently on steriod cream and I dilate her eye to help control some inflammation (uvetitis sp). She can be light senstive so I dilate her eye at night. It doesnt seem to bother her any. I do not have stalls just a big run in and shes been doing fine. She really has changed much since going blind (thankfully!)

What are you using to dilate the eye? Mine didnt wear off in 12 hours... I could turn him out at night, but literally was told he had to be out of the sun till it was down? Or is it ok since the eye is blind?
