I did a search on this topic, read the great advice. But wondering if a vet visit is necessary? I called vet but they are currently out of office. I am waiting on farrier to take shoe(s) off, plan to soak in Epsom salts and paint hoof with iodine/sugar them wrap (per suggestions mentioned in previous post). Just wondering about having the vet out and does she need antibiotics?

This is just what I do, not saying you should.  I never pull the shoe unless absolutely have to.  I pull just the hot nail.  Then I squirt diluted peroxide in the nail hole with a syringe and needle and follow up with iodine or chlorxedine daily.  In an emergency I have used listerine.  I have never had a vet out for a hotnail or used antibiotics.  I only soak if I can't get to the nail hole real good and pack if I am trying to pull an abscess out but the faster I pull the hotnail and treat it the less chance I have for an abscess.
