Can we talk dirty sheaths? I have a gelding who needs to be cleaned multiple times a month. Not because he has beans but because he stinks and gets itchy. This gelding is like a big dog, when his sheath is dirty and he wants to be cleaned he lifts his back leg like he’s peeing on a fire pole ?? vet has looked at him. He’s not infected, no cancer, no growths ect… he is bigger naturally in the sheath area though… do I just load the area up with some jock itch cream? Keep cleaning as often as it needs? Are we missing something?

I had a gelding like this. I just washed him more frequently .I could always tell when I needed to clean him cause he would start to smell. He was just one of those who got dirty more often. Nothing wrong with him. Kinda like some people who have body odor more than others  :)  

Thank goodness I have a heated shop to wash him in over the cold winter months. ?? LOL 

So any chance it could be a yeast infection?  Maybe talk to the vet about using a topical antifungal for a week and see if that helps.  It would be annoying to have to clean it once a week.  I also have geldings that are unkind about getting theirs cleaned though :/

I had a gelding that I had to clean once a month, he would get beans too.

Check out Equiderma's Sheath cleaner. It loosens everything up and I think it helps with the itchiness on these types of geldings. 

I have a gelding that's the same way. The one thing that I've noticed with him is it gets worse if he is on a high protein diet. If I dial the protein back it helps but it doesn't completely eliminate the issue as he's just one of those geldings. But cleaning once a month or every month is better than every week.
