Bless it. That's horrible. I'm buying padlocks to take to shows from now on. 

i have thought about using locks on my stalls at shows, but a fear of mine is that if a fire were to start in the barn over night (rare chance I know, but still a chance) then nobody would be able to get my horse out because she's locked in there.

Don't recommend for safety. If there a fire you're screwed unless you're in the barn with the key. If your horse gets into a pickle and needs assistance, nobody can help. I've seen lots of accidents in stalls, I've seen them put feet through walls and get stuck. If you're going to do it, put a phone number on the stall and do not leave the facility and have your phone on you 24/7. It sounds like when they checked her they just might not have shut the latch all the way. Always tie you halter or lead around the bars in case the latch slides open. Mine open the doors all the time by banging their hay nets on the walls. Their banging has opened the neighbors stall once too. And in the morning the only thing holding them in the stall is the halter/lead. Sad situation for them for sure though 

Did she have an accident or did someone do her harm? I got the gist that someone let her out of a stall.

I hang a sign with my contact info for emergencies. Unfortunately, there's a much greater chance of mischief than fire. Especially at the big shows.
