I want to start adding alfalfa pellets to my older geldings diet. He's a nervous horse and I think his gut tends to bother him sometimes. He goes through phases of not finishing grain or hay. When I'm at a show I give him electrolyte paste and that helps him drink and eat a lot. Definitely a lifesaver. However a couple days after we got back from a weekend show he hasn't finished hay or grain. Would half a scoop of alfalfa pellets morning and night help buffer some of that acid? He's on a low starch and sugar grain already. He also gets a probiotic digestive supplement.

So the contents of their stomach empties in about 20 minutes, so by feeding alfalfa pellets that way, you'll only be buffering for a short time. This is why it's recomended to be fed as hay, free choice or in a net. So theres a constant supply going through their digestive tract. You're not going to be doing much with pellets 2x a day. You're better off giving a buffering paste before you run if thats your goal. Or a daily buffer/ulcer prevention
