Location: On My Horse! | In June my horse strained her left hind suspensory. In July we did a follow-up ultrasound, which revealed a tiny lesion. However, she was sound and nonreactive to palpation. Yesterday (September 7) we did another follow-up ultrasound and there is still a small, visible lesion. (Like nothing has changed) Same spot and everything. She is clinically sound, and nonreactive to palpation. He recommended to start walking under saddle and will recheck in a month. Of course, notify him if there is swelling or lameness during this time. Treatment wise, we did wedged/wider shoes for support. I’ve been using Runner Relief, Magna Wave, and Laser. So, my question is...My vet mentioned that this could be just the way it looks moving forward, basically disorganized fibers. Has anyone had experience with the ultrasound showing this, but the horse is fine? She is 13 and has been running barrels since she was 6. Thoughts and experiences please =) |

Location: Claremore, OK | A small lesion is not good. It needed to be measured upon discovery so You could monitor healing. Ive rehabbed sevreral hind suspensory lesions, some of them 3% tears, and never had a horse show lameness on them. This injury wont show up as lameness, it will show as a horse running up the fence, lunging off a barrel, running by, avoiding the turn/using that leg on the inside of the turn. your horse needs stall rest and a shot if PRP, adequan or Renovo in the lesion to re start healing. The equine body stops healing at about 8 weeks, post injury, plus your horse has been too mobile, so you will have to start the healing process again. Frequent MagnaWave or laser treatments, anything to stimulate bloodflow in that area is a great help. *** a wedge or a suspensory issue will only load the suspensory more, instead of relieving pressure. You can't unload the DDF (wedge) without loading the suspensory, and vice versa (physical mechanics). a shoe with an extended heel will help support the suspensory.
re: disorganized fibers (hypoechotivity) your horse needs stall rest (or stall with very small pen) until you get good fiber aligment, minimal hand walking .

Location: On My Horse! | Thank you for your detailed response! Sorry, I don't think what I was trying to say came out right. She's been on strict stall rest since June. Yesterday, he said I could start hand walking or walking undersaddle. He didn't Specify measurement wise. He just said it was "tiny" or few fibers. I have never dealt with this before, so this is all new for me.
Yes, she has the heel extensions as well.

Heel extensuons are not the same as wedges. Wedges put more strain on the suspensory, heel extensions support the suspensory. |

| I had a hind suspensory issue. He had surgery and 3 months of rehab including prp and shockwave. Came back 100% |

I would recommend the Renovo injection...
Thank you! I just read your other post regarding Renovo. This was never mentioned to me. I will bring it up at our follow-up ultrasound. |

| I highly recommend looking into kinesiology taping! On Facebook there are several groups my favorite is Sozo Equine. What this tape can do is amazing and it's easy to do! |

Location: Texas | It will never look the same as pre-injury/pre-tear but you would think in this much time it would have filled in and at least changed in its appearance a little. I'm not a fan of wedging suspensories myself. I will wedge a back foot only if there's negative plantar angles in the back. I'm curious how yall found the injury if there wasn't any lameness, like, what made yall look and how did you localize it to the suspensory? Also I just treated a proximal suspensory tear with Renovo yesterday, hopeful to see some good results. There are a few options for chronic non healing suspensory injuries, one of which is shockwave (ESWT not magnawave). But I'd like to hear more info first. |

| I've heard good things about Renvo. I also highly believe in accuscope. I have not dealt with a suspensory injury but accuscope significantly reduced healing time in my horses extensor tendon tear. |

Location: On My Horse! | Thank y’all for your replies! Wrapn3inAK-As far as Kinesiology taping goes, no, I haven’t tried it. I am a bet of a skeptic when it comes to that. There is a girl down here by me that does it though. I may look into it. Casualdust07-We had to wedge her because of her negative plantar angles. They were both really low, which we believe may have contributed to this. This is a pretty neat shoe. I can’t recall the name of it, but it does have a wedge with the heel extension to provide support. I had to confirm with my farrier. I will get the name next time. The way it was found was because when I brought her in from turnout there was a little swelling. It was low swelling, so I treated with cold hosing and wrapping with poultice. After about a week of no change, I hauled her in for an ultrasound, which revealed a strain. It wasn’t until our 30 day check up ultrasound that revealed a mild tear. We are starting to think this was always here and was found by happenstance because the swelling was very low and the tear is very high. However, we could be wrong of course. We will see what is revealed via ultrasound in November. I will bring up Renovo to doc. He didn’t really seem too inclined to inject at the onset of this, but I’ll ask what he thinks. I am still wrapping with Runner’s Relief and doing weekly Magna Wave treatments. Gypsykalgirl-I looked up Accuscope and it looks amazing! I’ll bring it up as well. Thanks again everyone! |
