we had an older mare that we had to wean at four months. The baby was eating regular food and he never lost any weight. Six months is the longest I would leave a baby on. Also you may want to spray his hay to soften the stems a little bit and make sure you have him on a good supplement designed for weanlings. I would be concerned at weaning one earlier than four months though. JMO

I have weaned them as early as 3 months. As long as they are eating & drinking good, they will be fine. I like to give them some calf manna & Grow Colt also.

We have never had a bay before. What supplement would you all recommend? I have heard of Calf manna (sp?) but what is it exactly?

I agree with everyone .. The earliest I have weaned was 4 mnths and longest 6 mnths.. the baby will start to go out on his own more often and venture away from the momma ...

As CJ would say "depends on the horse". Usually 4-6 mos. If colt is really dragging mare down and she's bred back, then 4 mos. at earliest, otherwise we leave em on til about 6 mos. We usually wean late Sept. to middle of Oct. depending on how late they foal, plus try to do it when weather is still stable (not rainy or nights too cool), anything to make it less stressful on the younguns.
