I would use a side pull ( with or without shanks) on her & stay out of her mouth till she learned how to rate & her basics. She has been taught to pull against the bit, So you would just be fighting with her to put a bit in her mouth now. Also she needs time for her mouth to become senitive, if it hasn't been  ruined by running her too much. Good luck!

My experience has been it's like starting from scratch......but can be done!  usually start out with a smooth d ring snaffle and bit up quite loosely to the saddle horn area, be sure to keep the young one in a fairly small enclosed area and do not leave.  Next, tie rein on one side loosely to the tail.  If you can, then go to ground driving for a few days.....always saying the verbal command "whoa" and be sure to use a lot of give and take.  Once they get the verbal whoa down, they start to understand to give to the bit pressure as well.  All this is done on the ground.  Once that is mastered, then you can begin by just riding at a walk, and add the body position of sitting down, say whoa, and ask for a stop with the reins.  You have to be quick like once they respond, and alot of verbal praise and patting on the neck goes a long way.  No guarantee that Iam any way, shape or form of an expert, but it h as worked for me........just never do the bitting up or tying around in such a manner as there is no way for the horse to get any relief.  Tie with slip knots, so you can release one in case of emergency.  Both Sharon Camarillo  and the Wrights have excellent ideas shown in their books on teaching the whoa, then the rate.

I noticed  you  posted a new post(same post), you can bump your old one up instread of making a new one. Just write bump & sumit & your post will go to the front again for others to see that maybe haven't seen it before.

Also what exactly do you want to do with your race baby? If we know more of what you're doing with her we might could give you better suggestions.

I agree with mouse.  I have 5 off the trackers and every single one of them were treated just like they had never even been saddled.  Lots of round pen work and every single one of them learned how patience by being tied up under trees for 6 hours a day for 30 days.  Just because they've been ridden or raced doesn't mean they are broke.  Your horse probably has no idea what a stop is let alone how do drag his butt.  You have to start from the basics just like you would any unbroke horse.

You said she didn't like a hackamore, but have you tried a side pull with shanks? You need to not put anything in her mouth till she gets to knowing how to rate. That way you can save her mouth as much as possible. If she knows the barrel pattern, then I would put up a figure of 8 barrels starting like a funnel (smaller & getting larger). Marha Josey has a pic. of this  in her "Running to Win" book. This helps your horse to start looking for the barrel & rating it instead of looking for a place to run. I make my funnel a little different though, I put a 9th barrel at the very end where the 3rd barrel would be in a reg. pattern. Working this will put natural rate on your filly. If you put a bit that is harsh & start sitting her down with it, she will start sitting up on you(stopping) too quick instread of doing it naturally, plus you'll be toughening her mouth"JMO" Good luck!

Good poins on staying out of the mouth Belinda...I use a side pull or grass hack,....I also dont get on them till they are burying their butt in the round pen...We raise running horses for the track and I never rush them into a bridle...remember it isnt the bit that stops your horse! On my track horses we use our seat ALOT...It helps with the leaning into the bit transition

Do you rope, or have friends who do?  Common in our area is to take a barrel prospect without rate and start heeling on them.  Once they learn to rate the steer, they can easily learn to rate for a barrel.  I sent my paint horse off to a trainer to do this.  It only took about 30 days on cattle, after he had already worked on some other stuff with him for a previous 30 days (this wasn't his only problem, LOL.)  He came back a new horse!

I agree. Start out like you're breaking.

What I do is basically let them work and/or gallop until they slow, then I'll ask them to pick up their speed so that it's my idea. I get them thinking. like that.

Something else I incorporate is rollbacks at the right time. A lot of times when galloping they'll get heavy on the front end and speed up when you don't ask them to. That's when I sit back and cue into the fence for a roll back and make sure they canter immediately out of it. And every single time they get heavy I immediately do a roll back. Another variation that I use is instead of doing the roll back I immediately stop, back up hard and then immediately canter out straight or do a roll back and canter out.

I turned a track horse into a western pleasure horse using this and I've used it on a lot of horses just to get them light and to listen and it has worked great for me. You have to make sure you can at least get your horse to stop and back up. And the lighter your horse is, the easier it is to do, but sometimes I've used this first just get their head thinking about things and then we can move on to the finer things. And you have to be real consistent in your cueing and seat position and releasing the reins, and have a good seat to ride it through.

Good luck!!
