Has anyone had any stiffness issues with their horses following the shots--a few people around here have noticed signifigant stiffness in the neck and forearm following the shot--fort dodge-- if so what did you do to treat it?

Yep I have seen quite a few

DO you know if it was the combo shot with the EWT or a single shot of just WNV?

Two years ago, my mare (we think, because the vet won't say thats what it was) had a reaction to the 1st west nile shot. She ran a fever and she had a hard time moving her back end.  Vet gave her shots (of what I can't remember) and we layed her off a couple of weeks.  She was fine after that and didn't have a reaction to the 2nd shot or last years booster.  (hasn't had the booster yet this year)

Our pony did the exact same thing, stiff in the backend.  I haven't given it to him since.

I didn't have any problems with the single shot.

But the combos I saw had some problems.

I gave the 4- way, FT Dodge. and the Rhino and Flu and a Rabies.

Big mistake, My gelding was so sore and stiff ,he would not let me even touch him. layed him off for 2 days and then massaged neck and rode lightly today ,i think he will be ready to run Sat. You have to be albe to allow several days off after giving shots. I,m not sure which one made him so sore but shouldn't have given all a once anyway.I have heard from others thier vets are not recommending the WN combo.

I was just going to post on this topic.  I had my shots done on Friday last week.  Within 2 hours my mare was extremely stiff in her hind end dragging her back feet wouldn't eat and acted like she wanted to colic (pawing at the ground, etc..).  This was about 5 or 6 p.m.  I stayed out with her until like 11:30 p.m. and she finally started eating some hay.  Between this time she had pooped and peed, so I didn't think she was colicing.  She was stiff in her neck also (also had a knot).  All she got was her west nile and 5 way.  She's been getting both for 3-4 years, so it's not the first time she had gotten either one.  She's better finally, but still maybe a little stiff to one side of her neck.  I just laid her off for awhile and didn't do much with her, but let her out in the pasture.

I gave the combo and didn't have any problems.  Still watching my old horse though as I just gave it to him last night.

I had trouble with the first shot on a horse that had apparently just started getting WN symptoms.  He was fine that morning.  Gave him the shot and an hour later he was trying to die on me...  Gave him the second shot and he was fine, gave him the booster the next year and he was fine.  The gal that has him now gave him the combo this year and he was fine.

I was swearing up and down earlier that I was not going to give the WNV shot this year to anything, then talked to the vet when I was in there on somthing else and kind of had decided I would go ahead.... now here are more problems!!!  I just do not know what to do!!

Another thing to remember is that when you give shots in the neck, the serum sits in the pocket for a little while before moving through the system.  You can overload this area....  When you give your shots if you are giving more than one in the same area, be sure to massage that area and help get that fluid flowing.  I hadn't really thought about this till I became an equine massage therapist.  My vet/chiro confirmed this also.

My family has a horse that within a week of getting the WNV shot, it bagan loosing weight and looking 30 years old. Has yet to recover. The vet thinks that it had a condition or a cyst somewhere that with the little bit that a WNV shot brings the horse down, it allowed it to take over. Basically, we have been waiting for the horse to die. There is nothing they can do for it without spending thousands of dollars.

Another point...my insurance co included a WN information sheet in the renewal, stating something like now that there's a vaccine, you best use it bc we won't pay if your horse dies from it...well okay, it wasn't worded exactly like that but that's how I interpreted it. So, you risk your horse having terrible effects from the shot and you also risk your horse getting terribly sick and possibly dying if infected with WN and your insurance co not paying

I always light exercise & massage my horses after giving any shots. I think this helps. We vaccinated our 7 horses last night and made sure all of them got some kind of exercise. We'll see if they are sore at all today.

Another precaution  I did

was put my horses on the immune builder from SLH for 3 day prior to shot and kept them on it for 10 days after.

We got our vacs from the vet last week but have not given them yet.  Do most of you give the WNV vacs alone or do you give the all in ones?? (I think it is the 4-way)??

This topic has been discussed before.  Before deciding to give the shot, it might be a good idea to read the other posts as well.

Seems like there are a lot problems with this WN shot.  Reporst of mares aborting, studs going sterile, muscle stiffness and even some horses getting WN because of the shot!   I personally have my horses on an immume building program.  (The Dynamite program.) Have never given the shot and don't intend to.  I think the risk of getting WN is far less than the risk of the vaccine.  I would ask the question;  Why isn't there a shot for people?  People are prone to getting WN as well.   It is because the standards for testing are higher for humans, I'm sure.  They came out with this vaccine way too fast for my level of comfort.  Of course the vets will tell you to give it.  It's all about the $$$$$.

One of my horses have a history of getting a fever and being sick following the vac.  My vet said it might help to give him 10cc of banamine before I give the vac.  Anyone heard of or tried this?

My vet says split them also but it was cheaper for me to do the combo and I have quite a few to do.

I have done 5 horses so far with no problems.  We start on the horses still at the ranch next week.  I do massage that area though after I give it to get it flowing through them.

Thank you!! That makes me feel better.  Everyone I have talked to said that they used it individually.  My vet said that he hasn't had any problems and that is why I went ahead and got it all in one.  I plan to give it tonight.

My horse's have all been getting their West Nile shots since it first came on the market. My vet had been injecting my horses for it before I had ever heard about it. I'm glad though, because I've seen too many horses die from it, at the vet hospital my boyfriend used to work at. One of the ones that died was a horse that belonged to a neighboring ranch. AQHA Superiors in all the roping classes. They lost her and the foal she was carrying.

Anyway, out here in California they haven't seen a lot of cases. My boyfriend is the one of the only vets in the bay area that has seen and treated West Nile simply because he had been practicing in Texas. When people as him about giving the shots and the problems -- stiffness, mares aborting etc.. He just says when the Thoroughbred boys in Kentucky and Florida quit giving the shots then worry, because if it started causing problems in the multi-million dollar horses then look out vaccine makers.

I look at the stiffness issue this way. Sometimes when I get shots I hurt for days afterward, but other times not. Who knows why? Maybe I was just a little more tense that time then the other. It's the same with horses. I've seen them get stiff and act differently when given the other shots without the WNV.

Hey zipper!  How is Cali?  Read my West Nile poll and look at my last post (about once yearly shots or the shot & booster this year).  Can you ask your boyfriend what he recommends?

Hey Jess -- We won't talk about what I think of Cali. Since Matt's at work I can't tell you what he recommends, but we give our personal horses the Fort Dodge WNV twice a year. And all other vaccines twice a year. We don't vaccinate for strangles. Flu is given intranasal. The horses that aren't hauled and have lived on the same place for years get vaccinated once for everything but twice for WNV. Boarded horses and the performance horses get twice a year. Anymore would be too much. People were really bad about over vaccinating, but they were doing it every 3 to 4 months. Twice a year isn't considered over doing it by most vets, especially if you are hauling hard.

go to www.lostfoals.com and see what the west nile vaccine will do for you- I had 2 mares slip foals and I will never use it again - I also had a paint stallion that came up sterile for several months- I think its a ploy for the company to make more $$ notice that you have to have a vet to give it? maybe they are in on it too - since my vet swore it wasnt the vaccine!

I think it should be a personal preference if you chose to vaccinate or not. You have to go with your gut. That's why I don't vaccinate for strangles. I still think that if there was a big problem with the vaccine the big time TB and QH people wouldn't use it. It is ironic that you don't hear about problems with the vaccine out of the big tracks where WN first started around Pimlico or the big breeding farms in Maryland, Kentucky or Florida? Gray Starlight died from WNV a month after he received his booster, but do you think Polo Ranch doesn't vaccine for it any more? What do think their insurance company said?

Like I said I've seen to many horses die from WN and to me that's worse than anything the vaccine can do. But, if they are going to get it. They are going to get with or without the shot. You just have to hope the body has some immunity built up. A lot of horses get it and have mild symptoms, get better, and are never diagnosed. The bad thing is if the disease progress to the point that you noticed the symptoms. The axtia and lip twiching, the chances of recovering go down.
