Anyone still using this supplement? Saw an old timer at a show last weekend and he has always fed clovite, alfalfa, and oats. I've NEVER seen a horse of his ever have a dull hair coat much less his horses have ulcer issues. They are muscled up lil beasts! I recently switched everything over to alfalfa and oats and I'm thinking maybe clovite might be my new go to mineral. Speaking with my local vet he commented that clovite's vitamins and minerals are more bio-available because they help the horse to naturally produce the things he needs. He couldn't see any down side to clovite and said he might switch his cutting horse back to it if the coop would stock the stuff again. Anyone still using it?

I am glad you brought this up. Years ago I asked someone I idolized what supplements they used and she said none, but if they were hauling alot and/or working them hard they used clovite. Thanks for the reminder.

I remember using it years ago, and I think it is really cheap to feed.
Unless it has gone way up in price, it wouldn't break the bank if it didn't work.

We used to feed it to our brood mares 30 years ago. I haven't fed it since then but have thought about it. Its pretty expensive to buy and you can tell by looking at it that its mostly soybean meal(which is cheap to buy) but it has other good nutrients such as biotin as well and the dosage is low so the bag would probably last a very long time. Here is a copy of the ingredients.....

My vet recommended it to me too a few years ago when I was complaining about the quality of soybean meal I was getting. The soybean meal here now is totally different than it was 5 years ago. Back then it was MUCH more oily and put some MAJOR bloom and shine on my horses but nowdays its as dry as a powder house and I can't tell it makes any difference what so ever in my horses so I have nearly quit feeding it. Soybean meal used to make my horses look like a million bucks on on nothing else other than loose minerals and free choice grass hay...it does nothing now so I may consider Clovite as a replacement for the pure soybean meal I was buying.

We also use Clovite. My grandfather used it years ago, and we've just never quit using it. The local Co-Op stocks it. Seems pretty cheap to feed. I can't remember exactly how much it is, b/c it lasts for so long, but I know it doesn't break the bank. Their coats sure do shine. Other than that, no supplements other than grain, alfalfa/timothy pellets, and occasionally Cool Calories in the Spring when the horses are nibbling on the new grass instead of eating their hay.
