For extremely nervous horse before a run? I'm asking for a friend since I've never seen it discussed.

My horses don't function on ace at all. They are really clumsy and I think almost like they are in a haze. Just my opinion on my horses. I use THE Calming Cookies. You could properly call up and ask them to make a stronger level than 30 if the horse really needs it.

I would use Equi-Sure, it is what Jody Sheffield has been using on Zoey and has had great results with her nervousness, and alley sour attitude.

I prefer chlorapromazine vs ace - 1/2 cc under tongue 30 minutes out

I wouldn't use it before a run.  I used it on a horse that was on 6 mos stall rest to reintroduce him to turnout and light riding.

Yes I have. 1cc on a mare that was a witch and would climb the walls before her run. 1/2 cc only ****ed her off and made her attitude worse.
She ran great on it, barrels and poles. She would run a 19 every trip on poles even on it.  They don't get clumsy on it unless they never knew where their feet were to begin with.
That mares been long retired though. About 24-25 now.
Now nothing I have personally is on it nor have I had to use it in several years.

Thanks. She's tried it on her twice while practicing.  Like a different horse! The mare seemed so much better off, she was able to take her through the pattern several times when usually its one and done. I didn't know it was banned, but it has to be better than the horse jumping, sweating, heart pounding - full out flight mode the whole time she is in the arena.  My horse was calmer just because the mare wasn't a basket case. They are big buddies.

Yes it's a banned substance at AQHA etc and has been.
She needs to put her on it and actually accomplish something while her horse is on it.
Like walk in the arena and do nothing but walk and sit on the fence. Relax, talk to whomever stops to visit etc but forget the racing for awhile.
She needs to work this horse outside the arena and use the arena as the resting spot. Reverse pshycology method.
The mare I have and since retired.....was so used and abused, I bought her blown up. Tried to rehab the normal way but she would flip-literally. So I put her on this everytime I rode her until she realized the arena isn't a place to fear.
If this gal is only running the wheels off her horse in the pen then throws her back in the pasture - that's most likely the cause to begin with

Also- does this mare have major heat cycles? Your friend needs to learn when that cycle is and gradually only use it then and before long none at all.
The mare I'm referring to myself- I did this with

To each their own but I have had great results with chlorapromazine. I have had the horse check and rechecked over the last couple of years before turning to chlorapromazine. I use 3/4 cc in the mouth 2 hours before my run. I enjoy my horse again and I don't feel like a pinball game getting in the arena.

Were you able to eventually run her without it? This mare had to have had some real bad experiences somewhere along the line.  Away from the arena she is a little high strung, but not unmanageble.  My friend takes good care of her. We board together and she definitely doesn't just ride her hard. It would be wonderful if the horse would just calm the **** down.

Yes maam , sure did. Took A LOT of rehab but kinda did a process of elimination and figure out her cycles were awful for her. Just the rehab took a year since she was so blown up. I knew it when I bought her but didn't know about the flipping.
Eventually, she was ran off of it for many years and ran harder and longer without it. Became a hard one to beat. The sad deal, is after all that work, she crippled herself in a mole hole about 5 yrs later. Crap happens. She's still here though. She earned her keep long after she tried to kill me.

Some last a few hours, some last a month. Pick the one you like.

yes...have used ace on a barrel horse. some respond to it better than others. Some cant find their feet, some are barely affected by it. Depends entirely on horse. some respond better to the chloro stuff. I've fed valerian root to others. I don't think anyone can make the call that you can or cannot use it. Every horse is different. Just like 2 aspirins works for most people, I need 6-7 at a time. I have a high tolerance to drugs. Prolly a good thing cuz I sure did hang out with a few potheads in school and never could figure out what the big draw was??? lol
Sometimes it just a matter of finding what works best for you and your pony. But it (drugs!) made a big difference in one pony I had and helped him mellow out and pay attention and not be (so) fruit loopy.
