| Thinking about looking into a new/used saddle over the winter.
I'm currently riding in an RS barrel saddle. I find it comfy and a nice training saddle, but I struggle to stay back and in the seat around the turns at speed. Some of this probably does back to my foundation in hunters, but I think a lot of it could be helped by a saddle with a deeper seat and more forward hung stirrups - I feel like I can't get my feet forward enough sometimes.
I go forward, he drops on his front end and fades out, it's costing us time and checks.
What's do you guys recommend for a reasonably priced well made saddle with the features I'm looking for? Trying to stay under $1000 so ideally looking for something that goes under a grand used in good shape. |

| If you are tipping forward, I would suggest strengthening your core, and if that doesn't work the Marty Josey circle y is the saddle I have suggested to my friends and now they swear by them. Their riding looks much more centered. |

| If anything I think maybe too big? It's a 15.5. I rode a 16" pleasure saddle and the lady recommended a 15, I went with a 15.5. I'm 5'11 though so it doesn't seem small? I'm stubborn and was new to barrels.
I don't feel like it's popping me out though, doesn't feel too small for sure. Just doesn't have much of a pocket to hold you in anywhere and my feet want to come back behind me. |

| Thanks for the core tip. I'm stronger than the average person overall I think, but I'm putting together a gym schedule for the off season and I'll make sure to do lots of core. 6 pack here I come |

You say you are 5 11, are you body tall? I have a friend who is body tall, and the only saddle that can keep her from going over the front end is the Martha Josey saddle.

| yup, feels like my feet are getting out behind me. I looked at the martha josey and I like the look of it, definitely a deeper seat than my RS and specifically states forward hung stirrups. Now to save change and sell my RS!
Any tips on how they fit horse wise? Max is fairly slim with a higher wither, but hasn't been hard to fit so far. |

I had an older Martha Josey that I used on my gelding, hes a big boy but not a real wide horse, has a nice set of withers, shoulders not thick, and my Josey fit him really nice. I will post a picture and see if you can see how he is built.

Location: where the wind blows | I had the same problem. I ride too upright and like you come from an English background. I've been through more saddles in the last 20 years. Have driven my husband crazy with my constant buying and selling. Finally bought a used Caldwell and problem fixed. Have now bought a second used one and now I won't ride anything else. Love, love, love them wish I could afford a new one some day but just happy I found 2 good used ones. |

Location: South MS | I have a bad habit of leaning forward. I ride a Double J Lynn Mckenzie and a Pozzi and they have both helped me sit on my butt - I prefer the Pozzi but they are both nice saddles! |

I've been eyeballing a Pozzi, looks like it has the pocket and such that I'm looking for. Sadly usually the price tag I'm not looking for - but bargains happen!
You guys have been great. We finished our local circuit in the 4d awards this year and kept up yesterday against a horse who darn near made the NFR this year, staying in that 2sec range we've been in all year (but only 1.5 off of the horse who won our local circuit). I'm thrilled with the end of our second season, since the horse was free, amish bred, and couldn't turn a circle in July of '11. Can't wait to work on this next phase and see what next year holds! Sorry for the brag, so happy with my boy. |

| I have a bad habit of leaning forward too and have bought/sold 39483 saddles in the last 10 years. I am now riding in a Circle Y Just Be Natural and love everything about it. It has a high cantle but it slants back away from you so it doesn't tip you forward like a lot of high cantle saddles do. The stirrups are very forward hung too! |

I found a couple Josey's, one I'm waiting to hear back on and one that I'll have to bid on later in the week if the other one falls through. |

Location: Centerburg, OH | I rode eventers growing up and have a terrible habit of riding with my stirrups way to short. This kicks me forward in any saddle and I have tried a dozen at least. I bought a pro-rider and make myself lengthen the stirrups problem solved. Im sure a 15'' is fine for you. |
