I'll turn 60 in January & my problem is I can't MAKE myself buy a horse already started on barrels. The problem is deep seated and I can't get past this thing! My daughter is anxious about me buying another one straight off the track but what is wrong with me? I know when I was younger it was an adrenaline rush but seems like I have a bit more fear starting them now but see people go months & sometimes a year or more getting with a trained horse anyway so in that period of time, I could have a track horse going! Then my inner voice reminds me of my age.... hate this place in life! Budget has a lot to do with it? I can buy a nice horse off the track for $5K or less that is turning 4 & the money drops off on the track so I figure that's a better risk than a $5K barrel horse. Anyone have my problem? haha. My new Panther Mountain comes home this weekend!!! I can play with him all winter just pooting around & hope to be in the saddle soon! So excited. I placed my pretty Fisher Dash with a young lady 4 months ago & she's placing in the 1D with her! SO PROUD BUT NOW IT'S TIME FOR A NEW ONE! Anyone else have the same phobia?? I'm calling him Cooper and always loved that name.

Family responsibilities , age, play very real fears in our lives. At our time in life, we don't bounce or heal like we used to. The way I look at it, you can sit on the porch and wish or get er done.

Lol! Meaning your sister starts yours...or your sister becomes your voice of reason?

She and I are almost your age.  She has tons of more experience and does rather well.  I doubt myself so bad that I don't feel I can do it.  I have one that I have put in FF and PESI and hope to enter in some futurities.

She tells me I can do it.  We will see whether he stays with me or goes to her house.

Please try and be very thankful for your sister's belief in you. READ what you just typed! YOU JUST SAID YOUR SISTER IS WELL EXPERIENCED AND DOES QUITE WELL. Her experience obviously sees in you an ability that deserves a try! I think having someone who believes in you would be a great gift. I only have a wonderful daughter but she is a skeptic of most anything I try. Lol. She wants me to be safe since I'm alone but that gets so friggin boring & life keeps passing me by in between her visits!

Some might view it as fear, but I view it as wisdom!!  The last time I got on first I ended up with a hoofprint in my leg (for a couple years).  That was that.

These days I get them ready to ride, send them off for 60-90, then back home so I can get to know them a little, then back out for barrel training.

I have seriously considered that. After he gets off his high, I might send him off or better Pay someone to come HERE to my place to put some saddles....just until I know I'm safe & he's not as high on feed & vitamins since his last race was 3 weeks ago. I would rather someone came here those few rides and it would be worth it to pay them more to do that. ?

I love, can not stress LOVE, starting my own horses. If a colt has alot of buck or rear to them, I'll stick my buddy dave on them. He will ride the buck right out of them, then I take over.

It's a feeling of accomplishment if one of the horses I trained is out there pulling rodeo checks, or placing 1D, top 2D. I love that feeling. I've got my coming 2 year old I will start in the spring, and my weanling eventually but I love the colts!!

What's funny is that most of the babies I raise go to whoever is going to start them and I get a report that the young'un acts broke already.  My BB colt went to his new owner and was loping circles in less than a week, softly and correctly.  I just can't see risking being injured and laid up in these last few years of relatively healthy riding I have left!!

I really do understand your thoughts on it. I enjoy the training process so much though, love that they understood something finally and it makes my tummy tingle when that happens. What I need now is just someone to come here to put some western saddles on him and to know he's okay here in the 5 acre house pasture without spooking.... the Fishers Dash, Meg, never spooked here at the house & it was wonderful. I just didn't enjoy how bad she horsed but she was such a fast learner & was a joy except her horsey times haha. I don't want unnecessary risk either. Just need a horse comfortable under western saddle so I can put the bend/flex and pattern one. I love those times in the saddle.
