Yeah, I know it's been discussed before, but with the NFR coming up it just makes me sad rodeo athletes do not get the pay/glory/recognition they deserve.

And even though they don't, they are still my heros and I send out my good luck wishes to all our rodeo contestants headed to Vegas!

Just my vent for the day.

Deserve according to... you?  or me?  It's all about the revenue that the event generates.  Rodeo just doens't generate near the $$'s that NFL or Nascar does and their athletes are paid accordingly.  Not saying what's right or wrong, just the economic facts of it all!

I think those atheletes are totally over paid and become whining prima-donnas because of it. I hope to never see rodeo atheletes become like that.

I think it's the struggle and hardship that keeps rodeo people tough and true to themselves..

When you have 1000 rodeo fans paying $8 that's $8k in ticket sales. Also, no television coverage.

When you have 50000 Nascar fans paying $50 that's $2.5 million in ticket sales. And worldwide television coverage.

Get it?

I get that.. In RodeoRoseLand those NFL, NBA, and little baseballers would be paying  to play a game..

But there's a lot of things different in that Land...

I know that my friends the Wright boys that are headed to vegas right now are pretty happy with what they have made this year and they will be even happier on the 16th of Dec.  They make more doing this than they would else where.  It is all about expectations I suppose!  But who wouldn't want to make more?

I think high caliber pro rodeo could be promoted more and the net effect would trickle down.  NASCAR wasn't always very popular either, was it?  How many so-called "professional" sports are there where the athletes/contestants essentially pay to put on the show?  I'd love to see rodeo surge in popularity.  As it stands right now, to say you are a professional barrel racer, is kind of misleading, to be honest.

I agree! It sure cost me a whole lot more to fill my permit than I got back in actual winnings. LOL

I guess if they feel like they can't/aren't making enough money at it to be worth it, they do something else.

No one makes them rodeo for a living and to pour the time and money into it it has to be what they love :) they can always quit if the pay isn't good enough or isn't worth it anymore, otherwise, more power to them for being able to front the money to keep going down the road!

To be a "professional" in other sports requires that you actually be better than the moajority of the people out there that play it. To be a "professional" in the WPRA you have to 1) be born female 2) pay WPRA. They send you your card (or permit) and you can now enter the Pro Rodeos. They should go back to where you actually had to win your permit money at the rodeos and have another card member sign off saying you can compete at that level. JMO.
