Collision reconstruction is commonly done on cases with multiple fatalities or prosecution in California. It helps the investigators to match up injuries with what was going on inside and outside the vehicle. For example, if someone was unbelted At the time of the crash, you would see completely different kinds of injuries vs a belted passenger or driver. I also helps to give some tangible evidence as to who was actually driving (drivers have different injuries in different places than passengers). It also helps to determine speed at the time of impact when looking at internal injuries and primary direction of force. Nerd stuff.
