I have a big strong young gelding- he is very well broke- sidepasses, backs well, moves  off the leg nice- only been on the pattern about 8-12 months -going slow he works great- but when I try to add speed to his pattern, he gets a little strong and slow (reaction) in his set/turn. I currently ride him in an L&W lift bit (#180 with a 3 piece mouth). looking for something just a little "more" , or maybe just a change in mouthpiece(?)..

Do you feel like he is going well in that mouthpiece? If you like the mouthpiece on him, you could always try one of the L & W's other lifters that has a little more gag action than the #180.

I had my Max in a #180 with a 16 mouth, we ran okay in it, but he still felt stiff. When I worked him in a LW snaffle with the same mouth he was terribly resistant. We switched it up to a Josey Go Round and he loved it. He just doesn't care for the broken mouthpieces. Got a Myler Comfort Snaffle for daily work to keep him sharp and he loves that as well.

I did buy one of L&W s other lifters with more gag, same mouthpiece, but he was more resistant in that one. I can use any bit at home, trail riding or practicing the pattern- but not at a show. he just overpowers me. I mainly chose this bit because it has always worked well on my mare and its what Im used to in my hands.  I guess I just need to start borrowing bits and trying them- just not sure where to start. this horse has all the ability, and works great at home. its just not working at shows for some reason.
