Have a TB who is skinny - been feeding him ~1 gallon soaked beet pulp with a coffee can sized scoop (large coffee can) of nutrena (I think just the regular) plus another scoop of a mixed corn/oats/alfalfa pellets feed. He was on 8 oz. of cool calories but we switched to a cup of oil because its pretty much the same thing. He's on free choice hay and is looking better but he's not gaining weight like I think he should be. Are there any grains/supplements that work very well for weight gain? Am I feeding enough? He's just over 1,200 pounds and not being worked. Any input appreciated!

My hard keeper gets basically free choice alfalfa, along with Max E Glo by MannaPro, he gets 7 pounds daily of WellSolve Low Starch by Purina, and a handful of Amplify nuggets. He also gets supplements from SmartPak that include cool calories, amino acids for muscle health, and a hair/hoof/skin supplement.

He costs 2x what it takes to feed my easy keeper. Hard keepers are no fun to feed.lol

GOOD LUCK!

And maybe check your turkey and velociraptor situation - those can both wreak havoc on a horse's weight gaining abilities.

I laughed so hard at that thread! I don't think turkeys are the problem.. Pretty sure he would eat them alive if they came anywhere near his food! He bit one of the other boarders dogs the other night because it was trying to eat his beet pulp lol

I'll look into the MannaPro stuff - I really like the WellSolve because it's low in sugar and I'm pretty sure he has ulcers (we have him on aloe vera juice too) but I have to convince his owner to switch over - it's a friends horse. He has a muscle mass supplement from smartpak (love them!) but maybe he needs an overall supplement too. Thanks for the input!

Apparently me too!!

I've gotten the most bang for the buck with really good quality alfalfa or cubes and rice bran. I've found beet pulp will help some, but it's the alfalfa and the rice bran that always got the really good results.

Having a good cal/phos balance makes a big difference.

This is what I used with a normal amount of grain on 2 underweight broodmares and an old gelding.

has he had his teeth done recently? Alfalfa and rice bran have always been a success for me.

I feed my one 3 scoops ADM Powerglo, and so far it has made a huge difference!! The other one gets about 3/4 scoop Powerglo, and about 2 scoops of Woody's Summer Heat. And I don't have them on any supplement as of right now, am looking into a different supplementation, I have been feeding Animal Element Detox, and did not get very good results. When I took them off they shed a nasty dull coat and gained back their shiny one.

I also have had great success on my ulcer prone horse with the Wellsolve L/S. I have one that went through tons of ulcer treatment and prevention supplements, including 30 days of GastroGard. By far the most effective product that I found is UlserShield by Choice of Champions International. It is affordable too! $60 for a gallon that lasts a typical horse 2 months. I had a vet who also uses it tell me that she thinks it is more effective for treatment in some horses than GastroGard. I became a sales rep after my experience with the UlserShield product. I now use it on all of my performance horses.

Like someone else mentioned, if he has had his teeth done fairly recently and you know that's not an issue, I would add rice bran. That has always help put extra weight on one for me when I needed it.

Yup - he had his teeth done about a month ago (and they were BAD) so I figured if he was going to really start gaining weight because of his teeth he would have done it by now. I will look into the rice bran and the rest of your suggestions! Thanks all!
