So as I was watching video after video of past runs, I noticed that never in my 70 some runs since 2012 have I went to the horn on my first barrel! I do everytime for the other two barrels but NEVER have at the first. My gelding had a very square turn on the first, compared to being fairly round at the other two. Psh now I know why! I guess that isnt much of a problem with my old gelding (as he does what he wants no matter what I'm doing on his back) but this is going be a bad bad thing with my young mare. It took me months to get her rating, and the only way that got into her head was when I started dropping the outside rein at the pocket/rate point (depending where I was) sitting at the same time and one handing while walking and trotting and loping. She has only ever had a nice first one time at a show and that was when the barrel was set right off the fence (but then the next run in the same pen she didnt rate it at all) That was at the last show we were at back in Nov. That also was when she finally started rating so in the videos you'll see myself sitting like halfway across the pen because I didnt count on her rating (I never get it right). I did a test at home too, I let her cruise through and dropped to one hand on one run and then didnt on the other. When I went to the horn a few strides before she rated and snapped around beautifully, when I didnt she got past it and lost her collection. Anyways to get back on track I have no idea how I am going to break this habit, seeing as its 2 years old now. It will be extra hard to break on my mare because I'm probably am not trusting her enough to rate and turn. Any ideas, i'm a little lost here? Watching my videos I'm also seeing I am not getting sat down well either. Oh I also wanted to add that my gelding I was running before her was very slow and had to be driven, but my mare is more of a free runner than he is.

Goodness dont mind my riding, apparently I think waving my arms around is a way to increase speed (It has to do with aerodynamics
)

I'm not sure how to fix it other than just to make sure you think about it and catch it in your slow work and think about it even when your'e not riding, like when you make a right turn in your truck or while walking be like oooh drop my hand now. And when you're riding do the same thing, keep it in your head all the time.

It takes about 30 days for an action to start to become a habit in your muscle memory so don't get discouraged and keep at it.

Being aware is the first step! Really all I know to do is drill it into my head and think it going up the alley when I'm working on something like that.
