Location: British Columbia | I woke up to my 3 year old mare pretty darn sore... I am not the best at figuring out the origin of soreness, to me it looks like her feet, possibly both? There is no heat, swelling anywhere. Feed hasn't changed, she's been on round bales for months. She got her feet trimmed Monday, but he didn't take very much off.. She isn't the best to do so we are working on that. She isn't started, and nothing in regular schedule has changed at all. What are your thoughts?

Location: IOWA, still waiting on the short bus!! lol | ouch, dang it my mare had knees just like her, and when the weather turned colder, she struggled, and the older she got the worse it got,
if her hoofs are clean and not a nail or absess, she may of just pulled something playing in the snow??. then, do you leave her feet long for a reason?? |

No reason she is left long, he just didn't get a whole lot off on Monday because she was being difficult, so we tried to just work with her, he is going to come back in a couple weeks and take more off.
It is very nice out so I don't think it has anything to do with the cold. It was above zero yesterday and a month ago it was -30 and she had no trouble.
Her feet are clean.. So maybe an absess? |

Location: British Columbia | Are Abscess's and Stone bruises common in the winter? There is NO rocks in there, just frozen poop, haha.
What is the suggested treatment for abscess? Soak in Epsom Salts, and wrap with Epsom salt poultice? |

Location: Oklahoma | My mare in foal was walking like your mare. I turned her hard to the right and left to see if it was the same or worse since I couldn't find any swelling any where or a pounding pulse by either side of her pastern. She was noticably more lame so I just put her on previox for about 2.5 weeks until she got better. If you have a large set of plyers ( the kind that slide to fit different bolts) you can use that (handle side on the hoof) like a hoof tester to get a reaction. I hope she gets better soon! |

Abcess.
That was my first thought. Definitely looks like the pain is in her foot. |

Location: Oregon | Combination of freshly trimmed feet and frozen ground. I've had mine do this many times in the winter. Put her somewhere soft or boot her or shoe her in the front.
I've had horses that had to be shod in the front in the winter just for this reason. And were especially bad after trimming.

The horse CAN bruise the sole with ice chunks, frozen poo, and other such wintery lovelies. If your horse happens to have thin soles, winter can sure wreck havoc. As was suggested by another reply, I'd pull her in a stall and really check her feet for issues. I know you had mentioned she is a work in progress with her feet, but this may be the time when you get to suck it up and help the gal out :) |

Location: British Columbia | Thank you very much for all your help! I'm going to hoof test her tonight and see how that goes. She does soft hay from the bale to stand on if it is the frozen ground that is bothering her. I don't really have means to put her in a stall, but hopefully I'll be able to figure out what her issue is soon.

| Yep - abscess. Pack it with a mixture of ichthamol (wear gloves, it's not toxic but it's like tar), triple antibiotic ointment, and furacin. Cover with non-stick gauze (Kotex also works well and it's cheaper), vet wrap and duct tape. It should pull out the abscess within a day or two. No bute as this will prolong the abscess coming out. Hope your horse feels better soon. |
