My horse has had several. Vets say seizures are rare in horses. But my horse sounds similar to yours. The frequency of them may increase.

drpepper - 2013-12-22 10:12 PM Walked by his stall an he was fine went back by 30 mins later he was down an couldn't move an sweating bad.  Seemed like it took for ever an 20cc of banamine to finally get him up an moving. At the time we weren't sure that is what was happening, but once at the vet clinic it was confirmed :
So sorry drpepper! :

Thank you happy to report he is 15 an doing good!  Had the episode at the age of 7 an never had another one, due to removing all the bad things for him.  Yes he is impressive N/H!

HYPP has also been CONFIRMED to come from a Wiescamp mare. (Skipper W) You might check fro any Skipper W horses on the pedigree.

Horse with EPM would have minor seizures.  He would get stiff, he would bare his teeth although they were clenched, arch his neck, and then he would relax and start drooling.

If the horse isn't Impressive bred then you can rule out hypp.   Did you consider him possibly choking?

Interesting. I've never heard this before.

Sometimes PSSM symptoms can be similar. Can test through Animal Genetics for about $40.

When my mare had her attack.. You couldn't
Miss what was happening.. It was the scariest thing I've ever
Seen /dealt with.
Her whole body literally started to tighten up
In different areas it was like the started at her jaw
Then down her neck, etc.. When it got to get stomach / flank
Area it tightened up so much it looked like she had a 6 pack.
Her 3rd eyelid shows she is kind of out of it b/c
I had to grab her halter and shake her and talk to her
To keep her with me and focused.
My mares attack went on for about 10-15 minutes
Until vet could get fluids / calcium into her.
Then 30 minutes later acted like nothing happened.
Alfalfa cubes ( horse treats) triggered hers

Have the tail tested at Davis for 35.00 bucks
Well worth the money and peace of mind
(That's what it cost when I had it done direct)

Haven't had any tests done just yet. Traced back his bloodlines and there is nothing to suggest HYPP. Spoke to the vet and described how the "seizure" went down.  Seems like in HYPP the horse's muscles begin to "lock down" as my vet said. Everything sort of goes tight, there are muscles spasms, and generally spreads down/through the body?

When I described and discussed things with my vet he said that he doesn't suspect HYPP. He actually thinks it may have been a pinched nerve as this horse has poor back conformation. Vet suspects kissing spine and when this horse went to rear a nerve got pinched.

When the incident happened although his neck had tremors, his jaw was tense, and back end weak he was walking around his stall, kept turning to look towards his back, and was fully aware of his surroundings.

Vet said that I could send in for the HYPP test if it made me feel better but he doesn't think that is what the incident was. Told me to keep an eye on him and let him know if I notice any changes in him or if their is another incident.

So far he is perfectly fine without any changes in behavior. So I may send in for the test just to be sure but I guess now it's just a wait and see type thing.
