| So my horse has been having some severe hoof problems (vets believe it is alkali disease) and they prescribed some bute for her. However, the bute doesn't seem to be helping so my aunt gave her some banamine (IM) for about one and half weeks now and it doesn't seem to be helping. I believe she is giving it to them once a day, everyday. My question is: is it okay to give her banamine that frequently and IM? I learned banamine can cause ulcers and kidney problems and it should only be administered IV or orally. Is this right? I just don't want to make the problem worse.
Thanks |

I have seen all the do not give banamine Im websites and I have had the discussion with my vet. The abscess happens 1 in a 1000 injections. It has less incidence then giving ivomec Im. If people want they can discuss with their vet and add an antibiotic to the Im injection to prevent infection. Please have the discussion with your vet before jumping on the do not give banamine Im wagon.
My mom gave my mare banamine Im as I was not home and she was colicing, my mare survived and never had an abscess.

DO NOT yell at me! All it takes it that one. I also have given it IM years ago and will not do it again. I just don't have the good odds to want to take the chance. And I am entitled to my opinion just as you are so back off |

Banamine should be given IV, not IM. That is the safest & fastest way it can be used. If you're not comfortable giving it IV, then just don't use it. I've never heard of it affecting the stomach, being as it is never present in the gut to do harm as long as it's given IV. I've only ever given Banamine IV, unless it's an EXTREME emergency & I have no choice but to give it IM.
Bute is an NSAID, much like Advil/Motrin. It reduces inflammation. It will cause stomach irritation and ulcers with long term usage. So if you have to use it long term, you may want to treat for ulcers after treatment.
If the problem is sever, no amount of Bute or Banamine will make it better. It will only take the edge off. It's not a magical cure in any way. |

if nothing is helping OP id find something that does rather then give meds that arent helping.lol. |

Banamine is a NSAID just like bute, but does not target the same pathways. Medications can affect different parts of the body. Banamine inhibits certain mucosal cells in the stomach lining to build, therefore the acid in the stomach can penetrate through the stomach lining.
When administering medications to my horse I want to know all the possible side effects how it affects the entire body. I suggest that all horseowners do the same thing and have in depth conversations with their vet before any procedure.

It sounds like you may have had a bad experience with banamine, that is too bad. I suggest speaking with your vet about your situation.
Myself I have had the same bacterial infection from penicillin same horse 2 different years. This bacteria is actually lays dormant on the horses skin and introduced through the puncture of the skin. Aseptic technique helps lower your odds, and adding a specific antibiotic to prevent the infection. |
