Looking for opinions on the Sherry Cervi barrel saddle by Martin. Not a Crown C. Made on 2007.

I have one, I like it. I paid $1500 2 years ago and it was barely used. I find it hard to stay up in the saddle during a run but it could be because I have a big tuckus and not because of the way the saddle rides. It's a Martin, so it's well made--but, my fenders were rough out and I've about wore the rough out of them in 2 years, so they are pretty much slick now. It fits one horse but leaves dry spots on my mare who is flat backed/low-withered, so I would try it on your horse first to make sure it fits. I'm currently looking for something to fit her, but within a reasonable budget (not $3000 holy geez). I know a lot of people tout the Crown C's, but I also see more of them for sale than anything else with the "doesn't fit my horse" language attached, so that concerns me.

Most of the Martin or Sherry Cervi saddles for sale are the smaller gullet size... such as 7, 7.5, or 8.
It is best to have your horse fitted, so you know what size gullet to be looking for.

I LOVE mine!! I bought mine in 2006 and have rode it on just about everything! By far my favorite saddle. My saddle has been rode hard and is still in good shape. I did find that I didn't feel as secure in it with my ratey horse, but bought the Martin Racer to fix that.

I agree with this. The seat isn't as deep as I like, so I've had to adjust to that, but overall I LOVE mine. I got it used off Craigslist for $800...the best deal I've ever gotten on a saddle! It needed a little cleaning, and I used a wire brush to rough up the rough out fenders and the suede seat. It's an incredibly well made saddle that will last me forever. I've only had one horse it didn't work on, but he was super picky about saddles.

I've owned two before I moved to the Crown C. Loved them but with my horse that drops out from under you I didn't feel as secure either. I'm looking for a Martin Racer too.

True--mine has the smaller gullet, 6.75" I think. That being said, I am not convinced that the gullet is the only thing to be concerned about. You can have a 10" gullet but if the angle of the bars is wrong for the horse, you are only making your problem worse by sinking an ill-fitting saddle further down onto the horse's back and covering the tops of the shoulders where they are needing to rotate back when the horse is at full reach. I am still picking through all the saddle fit info, but I watched Lynn McKenzie's videos on youtube yesterday and her ideas on the way her trees fit are pretty good food for thought (her saddles are double J not Martin, but the information is pretty universal). She also shows the different trees on different body types of horses, which I found to be very helpful. JMHO.
