Does anyone have any experience with or know anyone who has broken their shoulder blade? I broke mine November 21st and my doctor is telling me he doesn't think I should ride until March. I am going crazy. Anyone know how long it is normally before you could ride again?

Thanks!

Please listen to your doctor.   Rushing it by a couple of months could only cause you more down time.   I know it is tough to wait it out but please do

I broke mine in August of 2010. I messed up big time and rode way too soon. I was told that it would be at least 12 weeks before we would discuss my being cleared. Unfortunately for Doc, if he wanted to get paid, we needed to take a different route. I'm now wishing that I would have listened.

Listen to your doctor. I broke my shoulder and DID listen to my doctor. I did not have to have surgery and I have 100% use of my arm.

Thanks everyone! I know to listen, it just plain and simple sucks. It doesn't help when you have a new horse in the barn either.

Broke mine racing MX. I thought I was ready to go before docs orders. I made one lap and put my bike back in the trailer. Your body will tell you when it's ready..... One of the things I remember about a broken shoulder blade is that I sneezed and saw stars and nearly passed out.

Bone breakage takes 6 months to heal. At the 3 month stage the bone is finally making repairs but the calcium that is being generated is soft and another 3 months before it has fully solidified. Spend time loving on your new horse all that grooming will help in the bonding. I had 4 broke ribs, crushed toe, broken collar bone and my left leg broke twice the second time included my ankle and broke in 8 places. Your horse will still be there when your healed.

The scapula is a big strong bone. It takes a helluva wallop to break a scapula and there are some late complications that could result in long term disability. Remember the scapula is the bone where the upper arm articulates....forms the joint. If you screw that up, you are looking at surgery which may not have a good result. I could go on and on with examples. With that kind of fracture, you are lucky you didn't hurt anything else. If someone comes into the ER with a scapular fracture, that is usually an automatic admission to the hospital, because of injuries to things like the heart and aorta that are sometimes seen. Consider yourself lucky and don't be foolish.
