 I have a somewhat rare problem and wanted some advice. I've decided to start exercising to get in shape and to help with depression/anxiety. I will not go to a gym and just do repetitive stuff like treadmills or lifting weight be ause I get too bored so I started a kickboxing class last night. My problem is I need to GAIN weight, not loose any so I'm afraid I'll loose if I keep doing this. I eat all kinds of bad stuff so I don't think changing my diet will help much. I want to get stronger and feel better but I look awful already being so skinny.

Changing your diet to healthy foods won't always make you lose weight. If your focus is on gaining weight, there are healthy ways to do so. You want to put on muscle rather than fat. I would highly recommend strength training and upping your protein intake.

Vary up your regimine so you don't get bored. Check out Pinterest for more ideas.

But ultimately, eating crap food won't change the way you look or feel. You can't out-exercise a bad diet. And if you are trying to gain weight, it comes down to eating more calories than you burn. Just don't go for the crappy calories (sugar, fried foods, etc.). Crappy food will negatively affect your mood and how your body operates.

Eat more protein and less junk. How do you think body builders keep their weight up?

And by protein I mean eggs, lean meats, nuts, and things that have "healthy" fats along with the protein. Kick boxing and cross fit will totally help you gain lean muscle weight along with a good diet.

You might try doing protien shakes, they are protien and calorie dense.

Lindsey Von was on GMA yesterday morning and talked about what it was like going on the red carpet with the super skinny actresses and models.  She said she felt HUGE compared to them when in all reality she's totally fit.  She said the said thing is even though they are stick thin they are what she called skinny fat.  If you tested their body fat index they would probably have too much fat so its important to be fit and have muscle.  Eat healthy but add more healthy foods in a day.  Work out and get your blood flowing and your heart pumping.  It does wonders for energy!

Eating healthy does not make you skinny. Not eating enough calories (or not getting good nutrition) is what makes you skinny.

You've already started kickboxing. That's great! That's one of my favorite things to do for a workout. But be sure to mix it up. After 2 weeks, your body will START to plateau and get used to your routine. So make sure you change your routine every 2 weeks and do something different.

If you want to gain wait, you NEED to change your diet. But do so slowly over time so that you can make them permanent changes. WRITE DOWN goals for yourself each week. For example:
Week #1 - cut down from 3 cans of pop to 1 can of pop a day.
Week #2 - Buy whole grain bread instead of white bread.
Week #3 - Eat a serving a green veggies at dinner every day.
Week #4 - Drink two more glasses of water every day.

And so on. If you make these small changes and WRITE them down, you'll be more likely to do it, and make a permanent change in your life.

Your end goal....
Avoid sugars and processed carbs such as cookies, cake, white bread, white pasta, pop/soda, etc

Eat whole grain carbs (in moderation) such as brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta and bread, etc. I say "moderation" because you never want to completely eliminate carbs. They are important for your body for fuel. But you don't want to overally eat them because they are indeed carbs. Make sure you read labels. Things say "whole grain" all the time on them, but then you'll look at the ingredients and say "enriched". If it has been enriched, then it's not whole grain. Make sure the first ingredient says "whole ......".

Eat fruit ... in moderation. Fruit is good for you, but it also is a natural source of sugar. I myself don't eat more than 2 servings of fruit a day. Avoid fruit before bed because then you're body will have "daylight" to burn the sugar, rather than being stored away when you sleep.

Eat tons and fresh veggies. Dark green veggies are especially good for you like spinach, asparagus, kale, and broccoli.

Get adequate protein. This is where people lack because they often eat too many carbs. To build muscle, you need protein. But make sure you are eaing LEAN protein and that applies to turkey (some people incorrectly think all turkey is lean ... some, especially ground, is not). If you don't like red meat, dairy, chicken, or fish (maybe a vegetarian) you can always get your protein from tofu, nuts, and other sources.

Eat natural. Too many people throw Splenda into their cooking, and think its fine because there are no calories. Artificial is not good for you either. If you must have a little sugar, so for it (in moderation). I personally feel that eating REAL sugar is healthier than putting something fake into your body. Same goes with salt. If you buy boxed items loaded with preservative and salt, you aren't doing your body any favors. Watch your salt intake.

Dairy is a good source of protein, but be careful because it is high in calories (and sometimes fat).

DRINK WATER. This one is so important. For a body builder, you are going to drink an ounce of water for every pound you weigh, at a minimum, per day. So if you are 200 pounds, you are drinking 100 oz of water per day.

If you start eating healthier, I guarantee you'll FEEL so much better, and you'll get stronger. If you want to gain weight, you don't want to gain fat. You want to gain muscle and definition.

Eating is 80% of the game. Exercise is important too, but eating habits are more important. Make sure you do BOTH cardio and weight training. Remember: YOu want to gain muscle to gain weight.

Besides. Being skinny is for wussies. That's too easy

 Thank you so much that is a lot of great information! My biggest problem is too much Pepsi and filling up on carbs so I'm.not getting enough protein I think. I think I'm gonna focus on getting stronger and healthier and let the rest fall where it may. Is that you in the pic?

Remember, 5lbs of muscle takes up less space than 5lbs of fat. So as you turn the fat you do have into muscle, you will gain weight. By adding muscle you are making your body denser and thereby heavier -in a good lean way.

A good rule of thumb for a balanced meal is a protein the size of your palm and a carb the size of your fist. All the leafy green veggies you want. Watching your sugar intake is probably more important than watching your fat intake. Get off the Pepsi now.

I'm doing a combination class of kickboxing 3x's a week and resistance training with bands 3x's a week. I just finished my second week this morning and I can totally tell a difference already.
