What are some good exercises to use to work on timing? I need to work my timing for the second barrel. Thanks for your help

Your position can effect your timing, Watching yourself on video can really help and improve your riding. Or it could be your horse might be stalling out around the second barrel. Do you have any videos of you and your horse doing the barrels either in practice or running?

i do know that it is my position that is screwing us up. im getting ready for the barrel too early and causing our troubles. I wish i could say its him but i know it isnt. I have a lot of trouble on the bigger patterns and just need to work on me not going to the horn and preparing for the turn too soon. thanks :)

I know I have the same problem when I ride my cow-bred horse. We're a consistent 3D/4D but when I'm riding her aggressively we're in the 1D/2D's. I'm more used to Free runners more than I am to one to get their butt down. Because I tend to sit a little early and I have to keep kissing and pushing her up into the turn. And if she tries shouldering in I just yell "HEY!" and she gets herself back into position :)

A couple drills that come to mind are the four corner barrel drill where you put four barrels in a square and do all second barrel turns one after another. You would do it as fast as you can do correctly. Remember you can go slow, but use your mind to reprogram your body and it will stick in your muscle memory for when you go fast.
Another that I have on my barrelracingdrills.com website would be to put 3 or four barrels in a row and approach each like a second barrel. Finish it and come back around for the next second barrel.
You could also work just one barrel and really work on your mental game and retraining your mind so it is up to speed with the positioning you want when you go fast.

I like to set up obstacle courses with ground poles, cavalettis and stuff to turn to help me and my horse judge distance and work together fluidly. But to work on timing making a run, there's no substitute for making runs.

Muscle memory is in my mind the biggest thing.  If I'm having a timing issue I have to do lots of patterns at a walk and trot doing it with the exact timing I need to do at full speed.  My husband makes fun of me for grabbing the horn around the barrel at a walk but its for the sake of if you do it and re do it over and over again you'll burn it in your memory and "hopefully" do it during a run.  Hopefully. LOL

i need to learn to stay two handed and quit weakening and going to the horn too soon and learn to ride past the barrel before i let him turn. i think working some of these drills and reinforcing my muscle memory will help..  thanks guys!! much appreciated.   It sounds so easy to ride past and stay two handed if i could just stop weakening :)

My new mare is the type where I need to come out of the first, go 2 handed, drive her in and then go to the horn.  She won't tip if I don't do that but she's not running hard if I don't drive her with 2 hands.  I know what your going through.  Its so hard!  Good luck to you.

My daughter has to talk to herself.  When she's doing slow work work, she'll say it out loud:  sit down, hold... hold... hold... saddle horn.  She doesn't have it quite perfected but she is improving.

eta:  she's also figuring out that if she has to say 4 or 5 holds before her horse's shoulder is at the barrel, "whoops, I sat too soon"

Try looking at the fence instead of the ground or the barrel. Practice  at a walk trot and lope not dropping that outside rein till you see the barrel in your peripheral vision.  Not explaining very well but it helped me alot to focus on the fence!
