Hello everybody!
I need a lot of help! I am brand new to barrel racing or should I say I want to get into barrel racing but don't know how! If someone could help steer me into the right direction on what to do it would be much appreciated! What should be my first step?

I would find an older finished horse and start with lessons. Do you have a place to keep a horse or truck and trailer? If not you may want to look around for a boarding option. Maybe even start out leasing a barrel horse at a facility and see if they would be willing to haul you to races for a fee.

Where do you live? Check out the local horse clubs, to see where you might fit in the best!

if you can afford to buy a finished horse now, don't get in a hurry to buy one. There are lots of people who will misrepresent a horse to a newbie. Find someone reputable to help you look. Ask them for references to talk to people who they have helped find a horse. If you've never run barrels don't be looking at a 1 or 2D horse. Learn how to ride a barrel horse first by staring out with a slower, solid, finished horse. Good luck.

My next question what does 1d and 2d horse mean? What's the difference? Just so I know for future reference.
Again thanks for the help!

1D,2D,3D,4D are divisions at the barrel race. The fastest time sets the placing for everyone else. The divisions are half second splits except the 4D is 2 second split. And what people are suggesting is don't buy a fast horse right now learn on a older solid been there done that until you learn enough to be able to ride that caliber of a horse.. Good Luck

Once you have a horse do lots and lots of trail riding. Find every obstical that you can go over and around. Treat every tree and rock like a barrel and practice your riding skills around them. It will build up your balance and your horsemanship skills. It will also do your horse good for he will not get arena sour for being pounded on the pattern in the arena.
