Hey everyone! I really need advice on what career I should pursue! I was wondering what other people chose to do! I would love to hear suggestions and ideas! I am currently waiting to see if I will be accepted into the nursing program, but I am unsure if that is what I want to do when I grow up! I am leaning towards a dental hygienist, but I am unsure of what to do! If you are either do you like your job? Was it easy to find a job, even in a small town? How much do you make? Can you support yourself (and horses)?

I work for a huge rice mill and exporter.  I work in marketing and logistics.

I LOVE my job!  I LOVE being in the ag industry!

For just starting this past July, I have already received a raise, I have full benefits, company pays for my cell phone, and I make enough (with my husbands income too) that I can race and live a comfortable lifestyle.

My job is very stressful most of the time, but it's fast paced and my days go by quickly.

I also work as a grain trader, but on the farm origination side. I buy soybeans for our plant and help farmers out together marketing plans. I also run a sustainability program for one of our largest customers and one of their national brands.

I love my job. It is stressful and it is fast paced at times. But it can also be very laid back and chill too. Pay is solid, benefits are good. I've been with my company since I graduated college in 2010. I have relocated a couple times to new states, but the trailer follows the truck so the horse comes along. It's been a fun adventure.

I have a bachelors in ag economics and an associates in agronomy.

I am almost finished with my program (Radiologic Technologist) and I love healthcare!! Its very demanding and tough at times, and there will be days that you go home upset; but the joy that I get out of helping those in need overcomes all of that!! Nursing is very tough, but it seems to be something that hospitals and clinics always need. You would have to have a strong heart and good people skills; be able to stand on your feet all day and deal with upset, angry, demanding patients and family members. But it will be worth it! I don't know much about dental hygiene; I wish I did!! But regardless, I believe that working in healthcare is one of the most humbling things one could do with their lives.

If you are unsure of becoming a nurse you should step out of the running. If get in and decide you don't like it you will have cost someone a chance to become a nurse that really had their heart set on being a nurse.
That said I am a registered X-Ray Tech and I loved it when I was in it. I now have a teaching degree and I LOVE being a teacher. I love every thing about teaching from the good kids to the bad kids. I Love it all.

For small towns, I've noticed the following educations are good:

dental hygeine
nursing
accounting

Honestly, I would take a look at job listings, and see what sounds interesting.  I would recommend majoring in something specific.  Like accounting vs. IT.  Really zone in on what you like, and go from there.  I made a mistake majoring a "broad" field (IT & Administrative Management).  I am probably going back to finish my last 5 credits  and will start another degree while I'm at it. In STILL don't know what I want to do.  Very frustrating.

I agree, if you are unsure that nursing is what you want to do...just get your gen ed done and hopefully by the time you have to declare your major you will know. LOL...there are some of us who will NEVER know what we want to do, even when we are 60...me included.

My sister is a dental hygenist and she finds it FASCINATING!

I was an Animal Control officer, then a veterinary technician for 10 years, then got laid off and was an assistant horse trainer. I now work in an equine products manufacturing company and for the most part I enjoy it. There are some days that are stressful, and sometimes I do not think I (and a few other co-workers) get the recognition we deserve, but for the most part it is enjoyable and the office atmosphere couldn't be better. (Full benefits, 401k, a COOL boss...and my job IS to find and watch barrel races and trends in the tack and equine accessories world.) I also started my own awards/customizing business this year to supplement this job or potentially bring some of my ideas to the bosses in the future for possible designs.

Do a lot of things until you find that one thing that just makes your world go round. There is nothing saying you HAVE to pick something to do for the REST OF YOUR LIFE if you are young. I know plenty of people who quit their jobs or got laid off at 50 and took a completely different career path.

I am in dental hygiene and I LOVE it.  I graduated in spring of 2012, found a job temping right away, which lead to a few job offers at once.  Im now working in the heart of downtown MN (which is a 40 min commute for me), but I make WAY more money than if I were to take a job close to my house.  I work Mon-Thurs, so having 3 day weekends is great to go do horse stuff!  In hygiene you dont have any "on-call" and rarely work weekends (depending on the office).  And you certainly can't complain about the money!  I wouldn't trade it for the world, no way Id go into nursing, that would not be a good path for me lol I'm making roughly (I've been with my current boss 6 months) $65.000/year and I will get a $2/hour raise in March.

If I had to do it over again, I would go into speech pathology. I have a cousin and a friend who do this. They both LOVE their jobs. Both work in small towns. Demand for speech pathologists is super high. The programs are hard to get into and getting your master's degree is a must. The plus side: super high job satisfaction and great pay. My friend is just starting, but my cousin has done it for awhile. She makes way more than her husband and he has a really good job.

If you are going to be a nurse be an RN, go to college and take that extra step. RN's make more money and don't have to as much of the really groos stuff and the LPN's and aids . The dental thing is good if you can get into a childrens dentist when you are done. Kids are better to work with! Sometimes your can be an LPN and work towards being an RN, if you need to work and make money while in school. I believe we need more strong women in the work force so I actually think you should go to college, you can get a grant from the government if you need to and most universitys will let you work 20 hours a week on campus if you need extra money. You can be whatever you can imagine! whatever you choose think about where it will take you and if you can live off of the salary you will bring for the rest of your life!!!

Banking is the only way to go.  Great pay, plenty of time for the other things.
