Okay, so I've started using a simplicity on my horse and I love it so far. I've only lightly exercised in it, so im not sure how he will do at a rodeo with it... So I am so accustomed to using a curb chain with my bits and it seems like everyone Ive seen using these have no curb. I put one on there, but seems to be useless with the way the bit works... what do yall do??

I didn't use one, but the reason I went to this bit is because my gelding didn't like a curb.

Well I bet he loves it then! I just don't want it to be there if its not doing any good....

I don't use a curb. I also don't feel that it has enough "whoa" to run in.  I use it to warm up and ride around at home.  A girl I know runs in it WITH a curb.

I ran a full season without a curb, thought I was having "control" issues and added the curb, I think the curb helps them stand up a little straighter if that makes sense??  I believe my control issues were due to a poor fitting saddle for me, not my horse and will take the curb off to see how things go this spring.  The curb should be pretty tight if you want it to engage before full gag is applied.  I love the Simplicity for getting them to break at the poll and suppleness!

It really is up the individual and the horse. I probably have at least 4 simplicities. 3 don't have chains on, one does. The only horse I run in one right now runs in the one with the curb chain. Play with it both ways, you may find a loose chain feels better, or you may find you don't like a chain on it. Each horse is different!

I have used it both ways. Had a super ratey mare that worked great in it with no curb. I tried it once with a curb on her and I couldn't keep her running with enough momentum to get around the barrel. I have also used it on a gelding that was a little more free and he worked better with a leather curb. You should try it different ways to see what works best for your horse.

this is why i use it, i have a mare with a VERY light mouth, total opposite from my gelding, this bit allows me to make "handsy" mistakes without slowing us down.
however, shes very broke and sitting up and saying whoa will stop her 10 out of 10 times.

it all depends on the horse i guess, I laid down some of my best runs with her last year with this bit, no curb.

i wouldn't think about trying it on my gelding though.

I like using it with a loose flat leather curb strap.

I guess I have a curb s t r a p  on all my bits (including the snaffles) out of sheer habit.

I usually don't have them adjusted very tight though. I find my horse stops just fine in his simplicity bit; even running barrels.

EDITED --- WTH. Auto correct kept changing my words of "curb  s t r a p  on  "  to "curb stocking stuff er".  WTH?????  I have to type it with spaces to get it to show up properly!! Weird gliches.

Thanks everyone... I just had a thought about this bit... I love how soft my horse is in it and it keeps him flexed at the poll nicely... downside is, Im not sure if it will be stout enough to compete in... is the Goosetree double gag similar enough to the simplicity to compete in while practicing in the simplicity??

I'm classy, I like a nice strand of bailing twine on mine! I prefer white but sometimes orange or blue is all I have around. I only adjust it tight enough that the gag fully engages before the twine ever gets near being engaged and it would be useless as a curb if it did. My old school trainer once told me he puts any gag bit together like that and complimented me on my curb selections for all my gags. I've always respected his opinion so I've never done anything different. The simplicity really compliments by hands and I've loved every one I've ever put on any horse, reiner broke to hardly broke- obviously out of the snaffle/sidepull phase.
